Wow wow wow!!!! Amazing to say the least. Great friendly service, vibe atmosphere, and the food first class. Very tasty and really decently priced. $40 for two people. When the food arrives you think, “that’s not much” HOWEVER it is plenty and filling but not heavy. I really want to go back and try the rest of the menu. The staff were happy and this really added to the whole experience. If I have any critique I would say the lamb was slightly overcooked but the taste was still amazing. You must go. Highly recommended
The Abyssinian is an experience! I've never had food quite like it before. We came in a group of 4, and although some didn't like the sourness of the injera, I grew quite fond of the yeast. The platter definitely is worth trying. You get a bit of everything, and there are some very great highlights. I am definitely coming here again and I recommend you go out of your comfort to try too!
Unbelievable. We haven’t been here for numerous years due to a previous change in ownership dropping the level of service a lot. But I am so incredibly glad we came back! The newer owners/staff made this a wonderful experience with fantastic service, great speed for food coming out, and most importantly… the food was perfect. The Abyssinian is back to being my absolute favourite restaurant in Adelaide. I’ll be back here again VERY soon!
Super lovely decorated venue. Amazing food quality and friendly staff. Very authentic. Will definitely go back to try more dishes. RECOMMEND!
Come with an empty belly! Even so we would still be waddling out of there with food coma after indulging in the generous Chef's Platter. It's the best way to sample a little of everything but the fish! Oh that fish! It was so good I left no morsel behind. The sour taste of the airy Injera bread complements the veg and meat dishes satisfyingly. The Platter for 1 though is enough for two people and they do cater for allergies and food preferences. Love the vibe of this casual spot, decked out with memorabilia and styles reminiscent of Southern Africa. Friendly service throughout the night despite how packed the place was. Melbourne's blessed with a few African restaurants and The Abyssinian is a definite gem.
Wonderful food with incredible flavours and great service from friendly staff. Everything stewed to utmost perfection. Thank you!
Went as a group of 5 people and everyone left very happy and very full! We ordered 2 chef's platters, the vegan and the meat, vegetarian, poultry and fish platters, as well as extra Injera bread. You can adjust the serving size to suit e.g. meat platter was for 3, veg platter for 2. Every dish was delicious, but I think the Asa Kulwha was the highlight. The fish was cooked perfectly and the sauce was just so tasty. The service is excellent and the crew got everyone in the restaurant to sing "Happy Birthday" for our friend! Great work Team Abyssinian. We will be back! Highly recommended!
This, just now, was sensational. The Abyssinian, On Racecourse Rd, Flemington, near the corner of Rankin Street, where we’re staying. We shared a Platter for One, $24 with a little extra dish of Zucchini $9 and it was so generous we just couldn’t finish. It was a flood of flavours, subtle and bold, and great textures. The abundant bread, made from a grain called Tef, the little stainless bowls with small servings of two lamb dishes, chicken, fish, the fava beans, lentils and Daal or Daal-like dish. Sitting outside on a balmy night on one of Melbourne’s glorious long Summer days. The service was great too. Five stars.
Super impressed will be back when we come anywhere near Melbourne again. Servers were lovely, the lamb dishes were the most succulent and amazing
Food was delicious and fresh, bringing back many great memories of our time in Ethiopia. Customer service was awesome too!
