I’ve tried many Padang restaurants across Sydney and Pondok Buyung is by far the best one. I’ve been dining here for many many years and the food has been consistently good. I would say they offer the most authentic Nasi Padang if you are feeling homesick. This one is definitely a must try.
Good things: - awesome food ! so yummy!!! - super affordable and large portion sizes! - very authentic! - service was really efficient and they were so nice! Bad things: - toilet was really dirty/smelly and very dark
It can be a great experience for foreigners and Indonesian diasporas who miss food back home. I personally didn’t think the foods were authentic enough for a Padang food. In addition, the foods were cold : Beef rendang: The rendang is more on the wetter side, making it a kalio. Padang rendang served in Indonesia is more towards the drier side, making it tougher and saltier. They probably did it to accustom to foreigner’s tastebuds. Sambal: I couldn’t see the iconic balado or green chili sambal that you will usually find in a Padang restaurant. The sambal they served is shrimpy, which, I would say, doesn’t really match Padang food. It is refillable though, which is a plus. My personal favorite would be the cassava leaf stew. It is soft, tender and flavorful.
Best Indonesian Padang in sydney and certainly the most authentic. The food is just amazing and unpretentious. Pretty inexpensive. Will be back trying more options
Best Indonesian food joint in Sydney. Full of delicious and authentic selections. I used to live across the street and the only place I get my Asian cuisine. 2 choices of meat and 1 choice of veggie at $12.50.
One of the Best Indonesian Nasi Padang in Sydney..As authentic as it get !!! Highly recommended if u crave for decent good Nasi Padang !!
I have tried a lot of good Malaysian food and this Indonesian joint makes the equally good slow cooked meals. I had Beef Rendang and it had a unique smoky flavour and lamb curry was also pleasant to eat. It’s worth the trip to Kensington. I give this place 4 bears.
Nice food, but I'm just gonna put it out there what we saw while eating there. We've been eating there since the price was $7.50, and this is happened just recently around November 2022, I wasn't going to write something, but I thing this might help, for them and for us as a customer. We saw one big cockroach on the food bench area, and then, while my son was eating his food, he showed me one small cockroach on his plate, and we just left. Hopefully, they will clean up after they see this review, or maybe the health department should come and visit. Let me know if any one have the same experience like us.
10/10! The spinach, green beans and potatoes are a must have. Plenty of curries to choose from if you're a meat lover.
Friendly service and I got practice a bit of my Malay. Tasty food and amazing selection of vegetables, fish and meat to go with rice. If they could do something with a few annoying flies would be great but it's summer!
