Te Manawa

About

Te Manawa is at the heart of a city that thrives on discovery. It’s more than a museum or a gallery - it's a space where people and ideas come together.

Story

Welcome to Te Manawa!

Te Manawa is a regional cultural centre where art, heritage and science themes dominate. Our exhibitions explore the past, seek to inform today and pose questions about tomorrow. We host international touring shows and home grown exhibits.

Opening hours:
We are open everyday from 10am - 5pm.

Closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year's Day and Good Friday.

Mission

Te Manawa strives to be:

The cultural and social heart of the City and Region.

A showcase and store-house of the Region's taonga and collections.

The interface of Manawatu and the rest of the world - where invention and innovation are hallmarks for everything we do; where our strengths (and point of difference) are our people; where the breadth and depth of our knowledge base, productivity and global impacts are presented.

A fun, rewarding place to visit.

A "must see" attraction for visitors.

A positive contributor to the economic development of the Region.

We achieve our mission by "exploring the heart of our lives" in a manner that is "heart stopping" for our visitors.

Te Manawa Māori: The Heart is a museum, art gallery and science centre in Palmerston North, New Zealand. It is operated by the Te Manawa Museums Trust, a charitable trust incorporated on 20 August 1999. From that date, the Trust assumed responsibility for art works and heritage assets transferred to its care but held on behalf of others.
Excellent free admission museum with natural history, educational and outdoor displays worth an explore. Upstairs has the Rugby Museum paid admission, and special exhibitions. Additionally, there is an art gallery with special exhibitions that change seasonally.
Palmerston North Museum is a welcoming space to know about the Maori heritage and art.nThere is Rugby Museum section. It is next to the art gallery where contemporary art is always on display which changes frequently along with students art work as well .nIt has a kids play area. My little one loves it.nBeing in city centre there are numerous coffee shops close by.
A really spectacular part of Palmerston North. There are some amazing permanent exhibits about Palmerston North and the Manawatu Environment and a really great kids playground. There are also lots of events scheduled and kids activities. Take some time and check the museum out if you have kids and while they are occupied check out the exhibits unless your kids have lots of museum patience! Rugby museum is a great place to take couped up kids as well there are a few physical exhibits and the art gallery is wonderful. Would recommend!
After going to this halloween we left feeling this museum was taking advantage of kids charging 5 dollars per kid and gave in total 5 peices of candy to each kid at the end no trick or treat and the candy was too hard old and a choking Hazzard. Left feeling scammed and my son spent the entire time asking why no candy and on top of that the scenes were not directed at young kids. One was a girl screaming at a fake dead body and another was a girl pretending to be skitzophrenic.... will never support the museum again after this experience
