Checked out straits Cafe after someone from work recommended it! nnWe tried heaps of dishes!nThe CKT, beef rendang and laksa were nice but the star main dish was the salted fish fried rice The curry puffs were FANTASTIC!!! Incredibly crispy, flaky with a perfect pastry-to-soft potato filling ratio nThe roti was also a huge highlight; super flaky fresh, thin and buttery with that fantastic naan flavor! nA very good dine-in experience a little pricier than other places I've been to but very good portion sizes ! Would return in a heartbeat for the curry puffs!!!
Been here a few times now. Food is never disappointing. Delicious pack with flavor. The cha kwe tiau is the best but the hor fun was my favorite. Hainanese chicken rice was good but could be better. The asam laksa was not my favorite. The har mee was good the first time but a bit different second time not as flavorful. The poh piah was huge packed with stuff, very nice. Definitely one of my favorite if not my favorite Malaysian restaurant around Melbourne.
nnWe always come here for their authentic Malaysian-style stir-fried flat noodles with creamy egg sauce Wat Tan Hor. It’s arguably the best I’ve had in Melbourne, full of rich flavour and thatnwok hei smoky wok aroma that keeps us coming back. Absolutely delicious!
After going for some 1000 steps hike, we headed here for lunch.nService was friendly and warm. Food was great and came quickly.nCKT- first thing that came, wok hey is strong, flavourful with fresh prawns.nHor Fun - the overall favourite in the family. Homely and wholesome taste.nChicken rice - this was more fried or crispy chicken rather than roasted chicken. Still tasted good, though chilli game can be stronger.nMee goreng - not as tangy or spicy as expected. Still tasty but perhaps not as appetising as the CKT and hor fun.nTeh tarik - more milky than what we were used to. Kids finished it all the same.nnHighly recommend to those missing Malaysian/ Singaporean food!
Visited 11/06/25 skip to summary for condensed version of the reviewnnAll points scored on a scale of 1 worst to 7 bestnnOrder: Satay Chicken Skewers, Crispy Skin Chicken & Rice, Ice Kachang & Teh TariknnRESTAURANT: 29/42nAmbience 5: a penang chique class, simple and presentable, not too noisy even when relatively fullnnAuthenticity 6: the dishes i ordered aren’t exactly regional specialties but those that are looked spot on, they gave the authentic energy. Lots of malaysians there so plus points given.nnCleanliness 6: Tables cleaned routinely, bathroom perfectly hygienic, no surfaces crusty or dusty, overall nice and clean.nnMenu Variety 5: Not overcomplicated, very Penang Malaysian based cuisine. Still not authentic malaysian satay but in Melbourne that’s normal.nnPrice 4: A little pricier than one would prefer but it is very typical for the suburb and city council, and adequate portion for price. Not recommended for big eaters though.nnService 3: Polite but not terribly friendly, perhaps just a busy night, I think one more waiter was required.nnTHE FOOD: 17/21nnPreparation 6: chicken was fresh and tender, fried perfectly, rice was fluffy, ice kacang was ideal. Food was well prepared and good quality.nnFlavour 5: Rice was fluffy and fragrant, chicken was great, the chilli tasted like it was from Malaysia, and teh tarik was very close too. The satay was great flavour but not malaysian, it was more fried chicken skewer and the peanut sauce was a bit flat.nnPresentation 6: it looked good, not sure what else to say.nnSUMMARY: 46/63 ~ 3.5/5nFood is pretty good, especially if youre a penangite and want a taste of home. I wouldnt deviate from penang food from the menu, and can be a bit pricy. I’d say it’s worth a try though, especially if you live nearby or if you like Penang Chinese food.
