St Mary's College, Hobart

Story

Overview
St Mary's College has a long tradition of providing an excellent education for girls in a caring environment underpinned by Gospel values and sound Christian principles.

The College was founded in 1868 by the Presentation Sisters and is still governed by them today. Their founder, Nano Nagle, has bestowed on us a charism which emphasises social justice and which guides each student towards a balance between her life and all creation.

We offer a breadth of opportunities for our students, from leadership to sport and extra-curricular experiences.

Please contact the College if you need any further information or if you would like to come for a tour.

Values and Beliefs
At St Mary's College we commit ourselves to the person and teachings of Jesus Christ. We strive to provide a sound Catholic education for our students, to enable and empower them to take their places in society with pride and dignity.

We promote and develop the full potential and integrity of each individual in our community, respecting and celebrating individual differences.

We seek to continue the Presentation Charism of hearing the cry of those made poor, and then cry of the Earth, as exemplified in the life of Nano Nagle.

We provide strong role models who attempt to demonstrate leadership in applying Christian values to contemporary issues in education, care of the environment and social issues.

We welcome the participation of parents in the planning and development of their children's education.

Mission

Operating within the Presentation charism, our vision is that St Mary's College offers a dynamic environment in which young women are able to fulfil their spiritual, academic and personal potential. At St Mary’s we believe that the basis of a good school is good pastoral care, and we take this aspect of education very seriously. The Head of Pastoral Care and the Year Coordinators, working with committed teams of Home Room teachers, are pivotal to the health and happiness of the student body. We acknowledge that learning only takes place in an environment where the learner feels comfortable, so helping students to achieve an optimum degree of comfort in school is a priority.

Another important goal is the idea of connectedness. We encourage the idea of working closely with parents as partners in their daughter’s education, and as we care for our students, we offer support to their parents.

We are continually reviewing our policies and procedures to make sure that we are providing the best possible learning environment, and believe that we are giving our students opportunities to grow in confidence.

We also believe that a large helping of fun is important, and we aim to give students the chance to enjoy themselves. Now that’s a revolutionary thought!

This school was great from kinder to grade 1 but years up from there it was horrible. Students were mainly horrible and was bullied in almost every grade. Was hardly dealt with. Principle very strict but in the wrong ways. Was told to be Lady like and was treated like a women in the 1900s. Friends were manipulative and horrible and weren't token to enough. They school therapist saw me like 1 or 2 and I was told that some people were apparently more important than me and I was ignored an told I was overreacting
It gets hated on a lot and really doesn't deserve it - although some girls can be problematic the teachers work hard and most of them care a lot about the students and how they learn. Students with learning difficulties can get customised learning plans to assist them. Truthfully their concerns about the uniform only come up if you blatently avoid wearing the uniform - if you're a productive member of the school and dont wear non-school items of clothing or excessive jewelery/makeup nothing happens. There can be some difficulties dealing with issues with staff, and the leadership system however these issues themselves are rare. All in all I really reccomend SMC - its a great place to make friends and it's easy to find the people that'll make your life a lot better and form life-long friendships
not a good school, i went here and i was singled out, i have been diagnosed with adhd and they didn't want to help my learning issues they just told me i was a naughty student. teachers have no patience for kids with learning capabilities. all girls here are just rude and nasty and pick on anyone they see. its 2021 not 1950, they care more about uniform then your learing. they picked on all my friends and made it hard to go to school. i wouldn't send your girls here.
the girls are terrible here with their attitude and some staff refuse to help you and deny you o extra help and just blamed it on friends
Why you SHOULDNT go here 1. They make you wear your blazers at 28 degrees and my friends tried taking there blazer of then they said oh You HAVE to wear it one block away from the school LIKE?!? Do you Only care about your reputation not your students!?! 2. Horibble playgrounds 3.half the students the push u for no reason
it was an okay school but i had a couple teachers who “refused” to teach me and the girls there come past and pick on you for any reason they can i wouldn’t send my kids here
St Mary's is a great school to go to, everyone is really nice, it is really easy to make friends! I really recommend it
I have had the pleasure of meeting a couple of the college's students. They are intelligent, well mannered and friendly girls.
Great school, only problem is the lack of oval.
"everyone that goes there is either depressed rude"- unknown
