Ok to add to the other reviews the Solscape is relying on location and limited supply of backpacker accomodation in this amazing town. The train carriages will cook you on a hot day and you will need to keep the door open all day and night for any ventilation - not ideal. Not just that but the beds and pillows are decades old - would be good to invest in, The reception/service is real hit or miss based on timing and they are unlikely to go out of there way to help you. Volunteers working out the back are great but also backpackers so not always clean in regards to rubbish area/showers/toilets etc. yoga is happening however you will need to try and get 3 people to sign up for it to run. Unfortunately due to an underage festival soundsplash 3rd weekend in Jan the clientele weren’t interested while we were there which was just unlucky. The highlight and must do however is the guided Sauna and ice bath with local legend - Sam, who runs the business privately
gorgeous location, cute double rooms we stayed in one of the train cabins, clothes line for drying, well equipped kitchen, friendly staff the 3 big fridges in the “railway station” don’t work I have seen other reviews about this but I think mgmt has yet to repair the fridges, there are 2 other smaller fridges but they’re quite full, the room was quite hot but hostel did not have fans and leaving windows open let in a bunch of mosquitoes/sandflies overall fine for the price :
Had a really relaxing and chilled weekend here. Shame the cafe isn’t open, but the yoga was absolutely fantastic, a real highlight. Walking distance to the beach, amazing views, super quiet and lovely people. A bit run down, showers and toilets need some repairs and it’s looking a bit tired, but everywhere has had a tough few years so it’s understandable. There were a lot of comments about cleanliness, which you could see was due to other travellers rather than the staff who did a great job. Come prepared like you would for camping and you’ll be fine. Raglan is a wonderful place and this is a fabulous location Nearby activities: Walking distance to the beach. On-site yoga. A short drive to town
The staff are very welcoming and we're kind enough to mail me my necklace I left on site.Rooms: 3/5
I stayed in the clay house in winter and it was such a vibe! Cosy and warm and such an awesome experience. Shared bathroom facilities were very close and clean but I'm tall so they were on the short side. Shared kitchen I didn't use but the seating on the front lawn overlooking the sea was perfect at anytime of the morning, day and evening. I love this place so much 1000% recommend for people who are unpretentious, if you are used to 4-5 hotels this might not be for you.
Solscape is a wonderful concept and the view of the Raglan harbour and location is priceless. It is full of interesting types of accommodation and the decks, kitchen and grounds really cool. Unfortunately, it is in need of some TLC - the rooms were dusty and the bathrooms pretty run down... I would stay again, but keep my expectations of facilities lower next time. Hopefully they are going to do some upgrades in the future.
We booked one of the two Garden Belle Tents from 30/12 to the 3/01. The website says "Our two spacious Garden Belles for the summer months November – April sit near the front of the property next to our organic vegetable garden with a shared outdoor deck area looking out over the distant Whaingaroa harbour". However, when we arrived, the tent wasn't there. Instead, it was a container sauna and some fridges covered with wood. We went to the reception and the guy there explained that our tent was moved to the end of the property, we weren't happy as it wasn't what we booked but we accepted anyway. Also, the website says that "A solar-powered LED light is provided" but we didn't receive it either. The worst part of the new location for the tents is that there are possums at night that jump and scream over it, what made really hard to have proper sleep at night. Therefore, we checked the website and saw a couple of caboots available lower price and went to the reception to inform them about the possums to see if we can move to a different place to sleep, but to our surprise, they said that everything was fully booked and the only thing they can do for us was to provide a solar lamp to leave outside. The conditions of the shared facilities were terrible, bathrooms were always dirty as the place was overcrowded with camping tents everywhere. We understand that was peak season, but we travel every year and even the free campsites have cleaner facilities It's a shame because the land and location are so beautiful, the idea of a quiet place like a retreat is great too but what you got is an expensive campsite or hostel. Saddest even when you realise that you pay $185 a night to use the same facilities and have the same experience as someone who pays $30. Not a place to go back to nor to recommend to our friends.
The seaviews from this venue are incredible. The owners and staff are amazing, community minded people who love caring for the environment. They are popular with the locals and internationals and well, I just love them.Hotel highlightsGreat view, Romantic, Quiet, Kid-friendly, Great value
I specifically booked Solscape as I loved the idea of staying with yoga onsite but there wasn't any. Boooo! I emailed beforehand to organise and they told me that I could book on arrival. However, when I got there, I was told that the owner had moved into the yoga studio so there wasn't any classes. We asked to borrow yoga mats and do yoga ourselves on the grass and they were really hesitant as they were shutting reception at 6pm and clearly didn't want us to run away with them. On the positive side, the site is beautiful and the views are great. The rustic outdoor kitchen in the unpowered camp site is charming and the other guests were all lovely. However I'm glad we booked the unpowered sites and therefore only paid $26pppn. If we'd paid anymore I would have felt short changed as there is a definite air of neglect and it didn't particularly feel like the staff care about the customer experience.. My friends and I walked up to the abandoned teepee village and it made me feel quite sad that such a beautiful venue is falling in to such disrepair.
The prices for the powered campsites 60 NZD for two people are exorbitant and a rip-off. They are located in a parking lot that is used by many guests including external guests who come by for sauna visits. The restaurant was closed. There was not a single yoga lesson for about a week. Cool concept on paper, but in practice poorly implemented or non-existent. Kitchen and sanitary facilities ok but rather dirty. Not worth the money that is charged.
