Story

In partnership, we have developed a distinctive philosophy based on the maximisation of individual potential and the recognition that we are a community of learners. We are committed to offering learning opportunities that promote a thinking culture, cater for individual learning styles, engage and extend our students, develop independence, resilience and collaborative learning. Our school has a strong tradition in the provision of excellence in educational standards and the development of students who strive and achieve success in academic, artistic and sporting arenas.

Set in the picturesque landscape of Templestowe, 15 km east of Melbourne, the school provides for both the local and international community through extensive programs that stimulate learning, creativity and imagination. The school is experienced in assisting students to make the smooth transition from international and interstate school systems.

The ultra modern design of the school facilities provides a quiet, secure learning environment and promotes a sense of belonging and identification with school culture. Interactive technology in each classroom enables students to communicate readily on-line through the internet and to develop sophisticated research and visual literacy skills. Extensive sporting facilities enable students to develop outstanding skills in a broad range of sports.

Students at our school are taught the skills to work co-operatively with others, behave respectfully and to value their cultural heritage.

In 2014, the school has 1030 students. There are 43 classes and the average class size is 24 pupils. There are 7 Prep classes, with an average of 21 students per class.

Netflix - 13 Reasons Why by Heads of School - Tuesday, 2 May 2017, 9:34 PM By now, you've most likely heard of the recently released Netflix program, '13 Reasons Why'. If you haven't seen it, the story follows the aftermath of Year 11 student Hannah's suicide through a series of cassette tapes she leaves behind. She has detailed a number of highly traumatic events that contributed to her developing thoughts of suicide, mostly involving her classmates, and each new episode is a new cassette tape and event/person. The program aims to send an important message - stressing that actions have consequences, thoughts of suicide should be shared, and that suicide has long lasting implications for the family and friends left behind. It addresses respect for women, highlighting the effects of rape culture and ‘boys club’ mentality. It explores the feelings of angst and isolation that at times teenagers feel. It is a realistic portrayal of cyber-bullying and the influence of social media. That said, it features graphic content and isn't consistent with many guidelines for media reporting and depiction of suicide. Youth mental health foundation Headspace report an increase of calls and emails from young people and parents concerned about the content. Headspace are worried about suicide 'contagion' and as such, have urged parents to be proactive in discussions with their children. Further, the show doesn’t positively promote the role of adults in supporting students and may potentially give the impression that they can’t help. As Heads of School, we are able to see both the positives and negatives in this program. What we want to highlight the most is the involvement of parents in conversations with their sons. As adults, we encourage you to watch the program if you wish and then preferably, watch the show with your son. Keep in mind it is rated MA15+ and isn’t suitable for Junior School students. As you watch, speak with your young man about all the issues that are mentioned above. For example, how does passing on a compromising photo of a girl demean her? What could they do instead? What does the treatment of the character Tyler say about the way the students respect each other? How could they intervene if they saw this behaviour at school? Who could they speak to in their life if they need assistance? Remember that most boys prefer to be doing things when having meaningful conversations (not have you staring at them!), so consider chatting about the show while you set the table together, or drive to training, or walk the dog. If your son or a young person in your care enquires about watching the program, Mental Health First Aid Australia provides some great advice: It’s okay to fast-forward through upsetting scenes. Viewing them in full is not necess

Both my children attended this school from foundation to grade-6. Full of high caliber teachers that are as good as those in private schools. Lots of staff development encouraged by the principal. And it shows, as NAPLAN and ICAS results are off the charts. It continuously rates highest in the state and country. Internationally recognized school with great student exchange programs with New Zealand and China. Great programs on robotics, philosophy, student engagement and leadership.
