The taro cake here is the best in Sydney I reckon, haven't found one that tops it yet. Soft, light vanilla sponge sandwiched with taro puree and covered in fresh cream. Not overly sweet and so, so easy to eat. It looks a little daggy or vintage! but always hits the spot.
If I could give this place 0 stars, I would. We got the cheese sticks today and the expiry is 14 June 2022 it is April now, however as soon as we opened the packet the smell of rancid oil was so strong I hesitated putting it in my mouth. I did anyway - and spat it out straight away because it tasted like it would give me cancer. I didn’t notice the bottom of the packet before but the soaked silica gel packets and the oil gathered at the bottom of the bag suggests that this has probably been out for at least a couple of months. Needless to say I will never return, but please make sure you actually sell food that won’t give people food poisoning.
So disappointed with Savoy Chatswood. I've been buying cakes from Savoy Burwood for years and the cakes there are light and fluffy and deliciously more-ish everyone wants a second slice. However I bought two cakes in Chatswood tarot and lychee for birthdays and both were so disappointing. The cream layers were so thick and heavy it squashed the sponge into a thin dense layer. The texture of the sponge was no longer fluffy. Each bite was just heavy cream. Go to Burwood if you want a good cake!
Can’t wait for their seasonal product mango cakefresh mango and fresh cream are so much a match!
Use to buy this cake from the hay market store over 10 years ago. I brought the taro cake for the 1st time from the Chatswood store. The flavour is still the same and delicious, however there is too much cream compared to the amount of sponge. It’s not balance. There need to be more sponge and less cream. It didn’t use to be like this.
Nice Taro Cake - not too sweet and freshly baked.
Our default cake place whenever there is an occasion in the family. Our much loved favourite is the taro cake. Enjoyed by young and old. The staff even hand write a message on the cake on the day of pick up without pre ordering if you ask them to.
I have been buying Savoy's taro cakes since 2006; mostly from Haymarket when I first arrived Sydney. Bought another for myself today 26/09/21 from Chatswood - tastiness: 10/10; services/attitude from the girl? Appalling; don't think I have ever seen anything like this bad before. If you don't want to work at the shop; just don't.
Edit on March 2021: it is now not a cash only store and they accept credit card with surcharge. I’m happy to pay for the surcharge and have since bought 2 bday cakes. I have changed the rating to 5 stars. Past review: They make the best Asian style cake in Sydney. Why the 3 stars and not 5 stars? Because the store only accepts cash even though they have visa logo sticker at their door. Who in a pandemic only accepts cash only? It is so unhygienic, imagine the staff touching cash and then touching the cake and packing box when packing your cake. Everyone is moving towards cashless. Maybe they want to report less sales so they can pay less tax to the Australian Taxation Office. I lost my desire to purchase this best tasting cake in Sydney. Hopefully one day it is not a cash only store.
Love their chestnut cake. The business has been around for years, and they are good at keeping the great quality.
