We were in the macedon ranges for the Queen's bday long weekend and decided to try this place for dinner. We ordered the charcuterie platter and 600g rib eye steak on the bone 600g was the meat, not including the bone to share between the three of us 2 adult, 1 child. The highlight of our night was the steak. Served medium rare, it was juicy, tender and very well rested. It was served with a side of roast potatoes, broccoli and grilled sweet onions I didn't read the menu properly, so this is in my own words. We polished off the plate - nothing were left behind. We will definitely be back if we are in the area. If you are going during public holiday or long weekend, make sure you book in advanced.
Lovely decorated restaurant. Other than that, the staff were sluggish and looked very bored and sleepy as they moped around. Made the experience very awkward. Lady walked up to serve us, yawning and when ordering an alcoholic drink off the male waiter, we weren't given options about anything he just walked away and had to be prompted on returning about what he was giving us. Food was quite good but for $25 for gnocchi it was less than a childs serving. Our food came out at different times and with only 4 of us and 1 other customer, there was definitely no reason for it to take that long. Probably wouldn't go here again.
The restaurant is housed within the old Castlemaine Fire Brigade station and the restaurant fit out is exceptional with its warmth and attention to detail. I had dinner there last weekend and the food was a 10/10. The waiters service and knowledge of the menu wine list was very good. Highly recommended
I went knowing that the owners decided to change to a more casual menu but was really disappointed. I thought given the previous menu it would have been at least interesting but wasn't. Very standard food, flavours ok but nothing to differentiate from other places. Was also surprised almost no local wines by the glass.
Great dining experience all round. Very interesting menu and the chef is obviously passionate about what he does. Very well worth it. Loved the wine barrels and the unusual beers. Highly recommended.
Nice decorated restaurant in Castlemaine. Staff were friendly and were great in recommending what was good in the menu. I had the pan seared gnocchi with charred zucchini and fresh peas and my friend tried the Western Plains Berkshire pork bell, braised in master stock, red curry and carrot puree, pickled green papaya. Food was delicious, good portions but we thought prices were a little expensive.
Not the fine dining it used to be.. overcomplicated dishes..generally ok but no synergy between visual appearance tastes and description... Public Inn was a shining light of great places to eat but at the moment and since the last time I was here 3 months ago itsost ALL the shine..hopefully it will come back
I haven't tasted good Arabica coffee since Daimaru in Melbourne decades ago but this place I would have to say serves one of the worst lattes I've ever tasted. This is 1984 Victory Coffee. Bloody awful. LOL
The food was extraordinary, well presented and delicious. Service was prompt and staff well informed. Very expensive.
Great food But could have sold more drinks to people Don’t know what is wrong with the restaurant s in this town Maybe the staff are to lazy to check if u need a drink They even look away when u try to get their attention
