Food quality & presentation: excellent! My friend & I chose a main & desssert each & shared everything which worked for us. If you tend to like large portion sizes I would suggest having a little something before you come as it probably won't be enough to fill you. Ambience: We were in the courtyard & seating is very "cosy" as in very close together. The speaker for the live music was loud & crackling & kept cutting in & out which wasn't nice. Would be good to get that fixed so the outdoor guests can enjoy the live music Live music: the guitarist & singer were awesome but where they were positioned seemed like they were just shoved in a cnr by the front dr? Again space is limited so that could be why Style: The 5 star food doesn't seem to match the decor of the whole place? The staff were in country & western styled clothing, check shirts, vests & depending on which part of the restaurant you were in the decor was either vintage, garden centre, or like Pizza Library with all the books. There seems to be a few themes going on but not one consistent one? Staff: all very friendly & attentive. Gave a great wine recommendation "Men o war" Back to the food though... can't fault it, absolutely beautiful, compliments to the chefs on an outstanding menu. This is def a place you have to try at least once if not more.
The salmon entree was ok, the flavours didn't really marry. The venison was lovely, well cooked with good accompaniments. Cheese was a disaster! Service with friendly and efficient. It was expensive for what it was but I am comparing it to Melbourne so maybe I'm being unfair? Overall I don't think that I'd go back.
Lovely ambiance, great friendly service. The food was innovative and delicious. Would go again and highly recommended.
My wife and I at last minute decided to see if we could book a table at this place, never been there before Kristin who I spoke with over the phone was super and was able to confirm a table... She was also our host/waitress for the night - Her professionalism & service was second to none!!! Attention to detail and knowledge of both the food & beverage menu was exceptional. The atmosphere was lovely with great music and lovely surroundings. The food was the best we have had in a while everything was cooked perfectly to our request and came out in a very timely manner. we had four courses We could NOT find a single thing to fault!!! We can't wait to come back here and are looking forward to taking friends along, as you don't find these types of classic style restaurants very often now... that provide this level of service and professionalism. Well done to the new owners for providing such a great restaurant here in the Bay.
Average food and despicable service. I am extremely disappointed in my experience at Post Bank. My friend and I were excited to treat ourselves to a lovely birthday dinner, and upon reading reviews we settled on Post Bank. We were seated, and about 2 minutes later were asked what we wanted to order by a waiter. We ordered drinks, but he pestered us further for our main meal orders. Having just sat down, we said we weren’t sure yet, so he went away. No joke, 1 minute later he asked again rather hurriedly what we’d like, and again I said I’m sorry I’m not quite sure. He then looked us up and down and said “Well we’d like to free this table up ASAP so we can seat... others, so you’ll have to order now”. The place was dead so I had no idea why he was rushing us, and only us. My friend and I are early 20’s, and we were dressed in nice but short, eccentric dresses, a contrast amidst the vintage decor. I immediately knew he was judging us on our appearance and/or age, as he was very polite and patient with the families and older couples seated around us. Just to be clear, I have no problem with needing to free up space if you’re busy, or if it was mentioned on the phone prior to us arriving, but it wasn’t. Disheartened, we ordered quickly. We then proceeded to get ignored in favour of the other guests when we wanted another drink or a side etc. We felt quite inferior and embarrassed quite honestly, and we are for the most part bubbly, confident women. Finally our food arrived, and we were excited again because this was why we were spending a little bit extra, for a delicious meal. Unfortunately, my friend’s steak was overdone even though she asked for rare, and SO very under seasoned. My pasta was oddly sweet and very unbalanced. Normally I’m not too fussy with food and am quite forgiving as I have worked in hospitality myself, but the mix of judgment, disgusting service, and a mediocre at best meal left a bad taste in our mouths, literally and figuratively. Long story short, don’t come to this wanky restaurant unless you’re wearing your Sunday best and like your steak as plain as the atmosphere of this establishment.
Nice little upmarket bar and restaurant, nice food and a good selection of cocktails. The staff are helpful and while the kitchen was a little overwhelmed the night we were there, the food was very nicely presented and all great. The room is interesting, with books from what looks like an old second hand store lining the shelves. Out the back there's a nice area with a garden feel to it.
I agree with the review from Brett below. The food is terrific but the service is average. If this place were in the US, then I'd give it 4 stars. But because I've found the quality of service in New Zealand to be less than stellar, I'm not deducting for it at Post Bank. The restaurant has a cozy vibe and great location. My tomato and bursts appetizer and beet root gnocchi were great, especially the gnocchi.
The food here is easily 5-star, however the service is polite, but mixed more 3-star. For instance, we ordered an appetiser to share and separate entrees, but the staff member had it all delivered to our table at once. When ordering mains we weren't asked if we wanted to have any sides, so I had to go up later and ask - that's an easy add-on for the restaurant, so they could be missing out on business there. Also, the staff could take a little more care with their presentation - at a place like this you don't expect to see bar staff with a tea towel around their neck - it's not a dive bar. They did do a good job of allowing our next bottle of Chardonnay to warm a little though, so that was good. With a bit of extra staff training this could easily be the best place to eat in town.
Restaurant has cool decor and a warm feeling. Food was a touch disappointing for the price. Portion of fish was markedly smaller than other guests; and beef requested medium rare came out medium well. Restaurant also does not accept American Express. Enjoyable experience overall, but diners who are well traveled or from bigger cities may be left underwhelmed.
Loved this little gem. Staff were really friendly and knowledgeable about the area. Food and wine was great quality, tootht portions were small and a main course only or even one main course dish without sides would leave you hungry. It is more of a fine dining experience but seemed better than a lot of the other offerings selli the street. Would definitely recommend and visit again, but not entirely friendly for the purse.
