Story

The National Zoo & Aquarium is privately owned, and is Australia's only combined Zoo and Aquarium - that's 2 attractions in one! We are situated on around 18 hectares of land just five minutes from the centre of Canberra. With a wide variety of both native and exotic animals, as well as the largest inland saltwater tank in Australia, there is something for everyone.

Wander in and have a casual stroll around the park, or make a day of it with family, friends and make use of our picnic areas and complimentary BBQ facilities.

We are best known for our amazing "up close and personal" animal encounters, which provide visitors with an opportunity to get up close and personal with some of the worlds most amazing creatures!

Never a dull moment at the zoo. Great place to visit in Summer or Winter.. Highly recommend getting a zoo pass if you have kids. You will get your moneys worth. Pack a picnic lunch as they have great places to sit and eat or the sausage sizzle is another great place to stop.

I am not a keen lover of seeing animals behind a barrier, nor enclosed. But there was such a great relationship between the animals and the keepers that made things some what bare-able for them. The entrance is pricey as is all the zoo. But I guess it is their home and they have overheads. Worth visiting!

We loved the National Zoo and Aquarium - we spent the whole day there and the kids had a great time. You can take your own picnic or there is a cafe to buy food (and ice cream!) There are lots of keeper talks and feeding times to learn about the wildlife - we saw so many animals up close. When the kids are a bit older we will definitely be back to experience the overnight options and the animal encounters. Highly recommended!

We went on a weekday and it was quiet. You know the white lion you see in the ads on TV advertising the Wildlife Lodge looking straight into the living room and into the eye of the viewer? Well we came eyeball to eyeball in person. It was an unnerving experience and I couldn't help feeling I was being assessed for edibility, looking into the impassive eyes of the massive beast. All the lions quietly followed us with their eyes but looked away as soon as we fully fronted any and called out to them. Only to look again as we walked off. It was good to have a fence between us. The potential raw power bunched in those magnificent bodies was truly awesome. There's much to see. A vast variety of land and water creatures, the aquarium standing out for the fantastic fish and the tiny sea horses clinging to the rock with curled tails like a possum. It was smelly in one place, perhaps a snake had just done a poo! There were some enormous snakes that really creeped me out. Thick as my thigh and many meters long. Shiver. The rich brown tree kangaroos were astoundingly and delicately beautiful, shocking for an Aussie used to big roos by the road in camouflage shades to blend into the landscape. I can recommend a visit. And yes, do take 3 hours.

New facilities and animals, and an enhanced visitor experience have lifted the feel of the zoo. Accommodation options are available and give you the chance to stay overnight. The addition of rhinos to this conservation zoo, along with white lions and tigers, lift its profile and give you the opportunity to see these rare and endangered animals.
