National Wool Museum

About

We love wool!

Story

In the heart of Geelong’s vibrant new waterfront precinct is the National Wool Museum. Set in an historic 1872 bluestone woolstore, the Museum building formed part of a vast complex housing the Wool Broking firm of Dennys Lascelles Ltd in the times when Geelong was considered the wool capital of the world.
The Museum presents the timeless Australian story of wool, from sheep farming and wool production through to the processing of fleece into fabric. A visit to the National Wool Museum is an essential part of a visit to Geelong and the Bellarine. Open every day except Christmas Day, Boxing Day and Good Friday, from 9.30am to 5pm Monday to Friday and from 10.00am to 5pm on weekends.

As a knitter and spinner, this was a review of where the Australian I industry started and what is done with this valuable commodity. Working machinery and active exhibits are scattered throughout to stimulate interest and there were plenty of opportunities for touching and interacting with things in the way through. Extra space in the hall allows for travelling exhibits and we saw a wildlife photography display that was just awesome but my favourite part was the working jaquard carpet loom and the knowledgeable bloke who operated it.

Geelong National Wool Museum established in 1988, speaks of the timeless Australian story of wool, combined with exciting contemporary exhibitions, presented in an historic bluestone wool store in vibrant waterfront precinct. The museum collection is a very special Aussie presentation of the development and importance of the wool industry, wool by-products and related machinery. We had a remarkably lovely lunch at the authentic Italian Dennys Kitchen, inside an elaborately built space of exposed wooden beams.

This place is well worth a visit for children and adults alike. It is 3 floors of memorabilia about the wool industry. In the centre is a massive carpet making machine. And dotted around are people spinning raw wool into skenes.

One rude staff member working on the VR stuff on the top floor, but the other staff were delightful. The carpet making machine was incredible!

Superbly done. Unfortunately it's not well known in tourist circles ... But worth a visit to Geelong, just for this.
