I took a co-worker to Mountain Designs at lunchtime for her to go buy a pair of shoes. 20 minutes later we both walked out with well-fitted shoes from the Ocun range. We were helped by Dave the assistant store manager. He's an experienced climber, and has extensive knowledge of all the gear they sell. I totally recommend talking to Dave at Mountain Designs for your next bit of kit.
Staff are really friendly and helpful! Although it took a while to get the pair of climbing shoes that were on discount and the right size I was after, the staff were patient to let me try to get the right shoe and size fit. They helped me order in the suitable pair and promptly called up when it was ready for pick up. Thanks for the wonderful service!
The store is really well laid out and the staff always have great recommendations. Their customer service is amazing! I love the MD products and find myself heading there more often than not to pick up quality gear.
This is one of my favorite hiking stores along Kent street for one reason, their alliance club membership. It's free to join, but you get to enjoy discounts off their products. As most stores on that street stock similar products and have similar prices, the membership makes the products at mountain designs among the cheapest. The staff there are very helpful and friendly which is an added bonusthough staff at most of the other stores are too. The only downside is that they don't stock a large range of hiking equipment.
The Mountain Designs Women's Ravine Hiking Boots are NOT WATERPROOF. I recently bought the Mountain Designs Women's Ravine Hiking Boots. They were recommended for the Annapurna Circuit in Nepal in March and I was assured that they were waterproof and would perform as effectively as Gore Tex in terms of waterproofing, but may not breathe as well. I broke them in in NSW and was really happy with them at that time. However, on our first day walking in rain in the Himalayas the boots were wet on the inside. When we hit snow they were absolutely SOPPING on the inside. They were so wet that not even stuffing them with toilet paper and leaving them next to a fire where we had one dried them out for the next day. I ended up having to wear a plastic bag over my socks in my boots and over my boots under my crampons to stay dry and safe as we walked in snow in minus temperatures. I was on a tour group and so had 12 other pairs of boots to compare to directly, and mine were the only ones that were saturated on the inside. These boots absolutely should not be advertised as waterproof! I hope that this review prevents other people finding themselves in my situation.
I had a wonderful experience today being served by Ashley. She was very helpful and made my day. She also helped me spend way more than I thought I would. Good job, you're an asset.
I visited here to buy a rubber rope to bind my bag to a trolley. After visited several shops around there, this was the only one place having the rope. Although it is a few bucks cheap one, the staff kindly took care of me.
They got nice things but the service and professional knowledge is extraordinary bad. Come prepared and informed, do not ask too many questions. There are exceptions however most of the people here are non experienced working holiday travellers employed for low cost.
I like Mountain Design because they have good stuff for reasonable price. Also, since it's in the city, it's easy to try out things even mid week. Customer service is quite good as well!
Best shop in the street. Majority of my hiking gear bought in Australia was bought there. Good prices, friendly staff, members discounts.
