I can’t speak highly enough of Mitcham Private Hospital’s Special Care Nursery. The staff were exceptionally kind, caring, and attentive while my daughter was in their care for two weeks. They went above and beyond not only in providing excellent care for my daughter but also in supporting me through this stressful time. Their compassion and helpfulness made a world of difference and helped ease my worries. I’m incredibly grateful for their outstanding service!
Had two kids at this hospital. Couldn't recommend it highly enough. Caring and kind midwives, knowledgeable staff, newly refurbished rooms and excellent tasty meals. Been here two years apart and I can tell the quality of care has been the same. Thank you for taking care of me and my bubs.
It’s hard to find the right words to summarise my experience in the Mother Baby Unit Perinatal Unit at Mitcham Private but ‘dumpy, dirty and disregarded’ would do the trick. I don’t even know where to begin, other than to emphasise that if your GP refers you here - seek another option. Firstly, the unit facilities, aside from being outdated, are unclean and not fit for purpose. An earlier review details this issue perfectly. The ‘kitchen’ is a 3 metre bench space with 2 old and dirty bar fridges in which you’re assigned one shelf for all your belongings that require refrigeration. My bottles couldn’t even stand up straight the space was so small and only one Mum could use the space at any given time. Not to mention the microwave had clearly not been cleaned in decades. It was grotty. Similarly, the communal living area was messy to the point of being unclean. There were random toys available but it was obvious they were never cleaned or sanitised as they were stained and some had an odour. The rooms were basic and prison like and lacked basic necessities required when caring for a child - there was no change table, no nappy bin, no black out blinds etc. The walls were scuffed and stained and it was clear that the hospital had no interest in putting any funding into the unit. During my stay, the dryer door was held together with duct tape and if that wasn’t poor enough, patients from the other mental health ward would be supervised to use our dryer as theirs was broken. This went on for days. What a laugh for a facility that charges $990 per night. The nurses were a mixed bunch, a handful rotated through that also work in the on-site sleep school and they were truly fantastic, as were a few of the mental health nurses who clearly love their job and care about patient’s wellbeing. The majority however were completely checked out and only there for the pay check. Some were even passive aggressive when you would ask them for help and you’d often find them in their office with the door shut. In terms of treatment there were ‘classes’ run daily. The only ones of real value were the yoga sessions run by Felicity or the on-site physiotherapist. The classes run by the nurses were usually late and unhelpful. In one class, the nurse asked how everyone’s day was going and after everyone responded she then literally said ‘ok well now I have nothing else to say’ and that was the end of the class. It was so bizarre. Positives of my experience include the friendships I formed with the other Mums and the psychiatrist I saw who was excellent. Hence the 2 star rating. To avoid this review becoming War and Peace, I’ll conclude by reiterating that without question, I do not recommend staying here.
If you’re planning a natural birth I would not recommend. The nurse in charge and some of the midwives were not supportive of my birth plan. They attached me to their faulty ECG machine and prepared me for cesarean prior to my OB arriving to the hospital. When my OB arrived, she advocated and pushed for a natural birth despite the midwives arguing in the hallway whilst I was labouring. Thank goodness for my OB and ONE of the midwives who were supportive of me and I delivered naturally with no issues. They also tried to make me and my son stay an additional night despite him making weight losing less than 10% of his birth weight 2 days earlier than my discharge day. A midwife took my son in the middle of the night to weigh him and coerced me to vigorously pump and put him on formulae. This impacted his bowels and our breastfeeding progress which took me two days after going home to work on. They watch you like a hawk and monitor your baby excessively. If you do birth here, ask questions and advocate for your rights!
For maternity this hospital is awesome. Feels more like a house than a hospital. The midwives are amazing, so friendly and knowledgeable. Highly recommend. If possible get the double or Delux room when health allows. Avoid room 101 if possible, it's opposite the baby assessment room and the assisted staff entry.
