Very fresh mussels and recommend to have a taste. Extra mussel is $2 each. We only ordered half dozen, should have ordered the whole dozen. Love them, the staff are very friendly and nice too. The chowder is very creamy and rich. We came back again fo next day,tried another restaurant called “Mussel Pot” decided to come back, I do recommend Mills Bay , best grilled mussels in town.
Very nice local mussels, it almost makes you feel like eating seafood overseas. Just too expensive, considering 12 mussels 1kg for $22 which used to be $18.5, still expansiveand can buy at $5/kg in Christchurch. A fair price would be no more than half of the current one. Edit. Hi, I will certainly come back: I need to take my wife and my son here, they both would love it!
Absolutely mind blowing experience, the mussels are so fresh and so good, I actually changed my opinion on mussel in general, it made me enjoy and love eating mussels. Their freshest mussels taste tender, even a little crispy no less, their food is something I often miss when not having it. Ps, be aware of their very limited business hours, only a few hours basically lunch time only on a few days in a week, so do your homework before going, to avoid any disappointment.
Yet another top score spot for Chasing a Plate. This place has stunning food. What a beautiful lunch in the sun. By far the way best mussels in Havelock - the mussel capital of the world. We had the tasting platter and grilled garlic mussels. Every mouthful was delicious and we can't wait to return. Thai curry mussels were our favourite - but all were amazing. The ONLY place to get mussels in Havelock - Mills Bay!! ... and their FISH is totally amazing - have had better chips - but their fish is simply superb!! Mussel chowder is superb. Only downside - Seating for customers is limited to a few really uncomfortable metal stools. A few outdoor tables and chairs would make a huge difference.
Great little place with fresh, creatively cooked, delicious mussels! Should definitely stop by if you get the chance. The curry/satay and garlic butter mussels were a highlight for us. This place definitely deserves a lot more attention!

Freshest mussels ever I have tasted. 5 out of 5 is not enough. It is the best place of its kind in NZ. Loved to see their pride and passion about mussels. Needless to say, their staff were so friendly and attentive. Will go back. Highly recommend to all.
The mussels themselves were great, definitely some of the best i've had. The preparation was okay, too much lemon made my dish very acidic. I would gladly buy some mussels at the wholesale price instead of eating at the restaurant.
We drove specifically via havelock to chch to eat at Mills Bay, unfortunately we did not end up eating. The food looked good. We ordered after 10mins I thought I’d check to see if we had time for a stroll, the lady behind the counter said your order would be 20-30mins away, we went for a walk, returning after 20 mins- I checked in with the girls and they indicated the grilled mussels where being cooked, another 10mins went by, I went back and checked again, the girls indicated that the order had not even be started. We could not wait any longer 40mins all up, the girls refunded our money, and offered some free cold mussels- thanks. It would have been good to have been told on ordering there was a long wait, there seemed to be a lot of staff wondering around doing not alot whilst two young girls trying there hardest to keep up.
Stopped in as my partner and I saw Havelock was the town for mussels. Came to Mills Bay Mussels and was treated with great customer service, we had garlic mussels and they tasted beautiful, then we brought some live mussels to take away with us and were given some free cooking tips! Will definitely be back.
