My young adult daughter and I happened in to "Apples for Charlotte" for a cup of coffee, or so we had planned. Worldly and well traveled people, we are pretty well tuned-up on food and drink. We like both and admit to being, well, particular but not preciously fussy. My daughter ordered a coffee and a baked item while I stared stupidly at the blackboard menu on the wall, not being hungry but being an avid reader of menus, I guess. I saw on the menu a bagel offering with a couple of optional toppings. With a raised eyebrow to suggest "As if!" I pointed this out to the daughter. She nodded and smiled, sharing my suspicion. A bagel in Havelock? We had both been served in many places and on too many occasions a soft lump of bread-like substance with a hole located somewhere near the middle of thing that was masquerading unconvincingly as a bagel, not the chewy delight that a real bagel must be. But I noted the smoked salmon option and ordered the thing if only for my love of smoked salmon, thinking I could always give the lump of bread-like stuff to the gulls. I took one bite, stood up and demanded an audience with the two young women running the joint. I quickly got a hearing. "Where did you get this bagel!" I demanded (remember now, Havelock is noted for its mussels, and bugger-all else). "We make them, we make everything here" came the reply. I was stunned. That bagel would have passed muster in New York, and thus probably anywhere else. The conversion then went on with these two young women, interspersed with our savouring of their offerings, a second bagel with cream cheese and salmon was had, along with great coffee. "Where did they train?" I asked. "Self taught" I was told, more impressed by the minute I was becoming. I asked, perhaps being a little smarmy, if the gum-booted fisher-folk and mussel factory workers ventured in to this little cafe which is decidedly clean and neat and, well, on the feminine side of of the ambience/decor spectrum. They smiled and said "They are starting to". I thought but did not say "There is hope in this world yet!". We left much satisfied and cheered, and laden with some additional baked goods in order to test their abilities even further. Were impressed and delighted that we were so thoughtful as to take things away for later in spite of having full stomachs. My only prior visit to Havelock was in 1997, and the mussels made me want to come back. I now have two reasons. We most strongly recommend this cafe to you. No, we insist you give them a try. Trust us. Disclaimer: I am a 100% disinterested party. I have no prior knowledge of the people or this business. I owe them nothing, nor do they owe me.
