Maritime Museum of Townsville

Story

The Maritime Museum of Townsville is best known for its display about the doomed ship SS Yongala which sank south of Townsville in 1911 with the loss of all 122 on board. The display includes a video showing the discovery and archaeology of the wreck, one of the world’s premier wreck dive sites. Other fascinating exhibits include The Women’s War 2 display, which provides an insight into the lives of women living and working in Townsville during the Second World War; the tragedy associated with the Bay Rock lighthouse; information about the Royal Australian Navy, the history of Townsville and its port, and the hard hat diving industry of Townsville. A model boat building room, boat shed, naval guns, small research library and picnic area.

A classic older style museum, dedicated to Navy, merchant navy, wharfs, and the people involved. Lots of reading information, lots, but also video. Good for kids, adults, and fossils. No unusual gift or snack bar. There are cafe and restaurants over the road. Great parking. Friendly for disability, frail , juniors.
Un joli musée, avec quelques objets remontés du SS Yongala et des jeux pour les enfants.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
Museum of model ships and maritime services ...very informative displays about seafarers life of yesteryears.. some of the mini ship models are incredibly detailed, excellent craft work and knowledge...Museum helped to improve my respect to all those seafarers who contributed to create this modern world. .... Cash only.

It was quite informative. I like reading about the WWII history and there is plenty of that here. The photo is a scale model of the USS Lexington which was sunk at the battle of the Coral Sea.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo

We visited this museum and we were very surprised we thought it would only be a small museum and we would have a quick look, it has so much to look at and read and is just beautiful we loved our time here and will definitely go back. It has fantastic ships models to admire and so much history. It is looked after by volunteers and they should be very proud of themselves for the beautiful museum they have put together. It is set on the marina and you explore each room that is set out with information. They even have a lighthouse. Great place to visit.
Biggest problem I had during my visit was I run out of time. To read all the factual information you really need a full day, so much on display, models, videos to watch, articles to read. But really enjoyed it, but will need to visit again to finish off everything.
$15 entry is a bit steep for a museum that receives public funding from the Queensland government. Museums and art galleries should be free to the public so that EVERYONE can access them regardless of their income level.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
