Story

John Fawkner Private Hospital’s reputation as the facility of choice for the people of Melbourne’s north-west is testimony to the hard work and dedication of our friendly and highly trained nursing staff, health professionals and accredited private specialists.

Formerly Sacred Heart Hospital, it was built by the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart and opened its doors in September 1939. At that time, Sacred Heart was perhaps best known as a maternity hospital and the midwifery unit was the third busiest in Victoria.

Today, our hospital is a 147 bed major surgical, acute medical and emergency hospital located in Melbourne’s north-western suburbs. Equipped for a comprehensive range of surgical procedures, medical treatment and diagnostic services, we are recognised by both the local community and visiting medical fraternity as contributing to the provision of a high level of patient care and support.

We expect all our nursing staff, health professionals and accredited private specialists to contribute to the provision of the best standards of care for our patients and this means getting the fundamentals right too. From the moment they enter our hospital all patients receive high quality care. All patient requests are paramount and we will endeavour to comply with their needs.

John Fawkner Private Hospital is an accredited member of the Australian Council on Healthcare Standards (ACHS) who work with us in establishing standards and procedures, which underpin our primary goal to contribute to the provision of the best quality of service and care in collaboration with accredited private specialists.

First time visiting this hospital and will definitely be our last. Attended the ED with my partner who experienced a work accident and had excruciating pan up his left side of his chest and arm. We were seated and then went through triage and registration to which they proceeded to explain that we were expected to pay the $440 to be seen. We waited nearly 4 hours whilst watching people who had walked in long after us get attended to and go in before us, only to be told that they weren’t sure if our insurance was going to be able to cover any cost of testing that needed to be done. ED receptionist was somewhat apologetic and explained that that information should have been shared with us earlier on in our arrival, would have been nice to know before we waited 3 hours before anyone came to see us. After nearly 4 hours of waiting we were taken to a little room and told that there would most likely be out of pocket costs and were probably better off going to public but they could try to run some tests if we wanted. We were instructed to go back to the waiting room again and wait for information about x-rays!! We sat again for nearly another hour. We ended up leaving without being seen by anyone. As we were leaving staff were not apologetic about wait time. My partner was also not offered any kind of pain relief. Disgustingly poor experience

My mum spent her final days at john Falkner hospital, they were so kind and understanding , great doctors and the nurses on the 4th floor where unbelievable.we are so lucky to have such a great institution like this , thankyou all , you are all an amazing group of human beings. Be proud of what you do ever day , in the face of great adversedy and the comfort you bring.Society needs people like you , thanks.
Hospital stuck in a time warp - close your eyes and wake up in the 1970s. Paper based administration. Charging for multiple admissions to Emergency Department within 24 hours. Uncaring Oncology department. Blunt, zero compassion and cold bedside manner from oncologists; incompetent, unintelligible care from foreign nurses who lack basic English competency. Continued, unnecessary repeat prescription of myriad of drugs. This place is a worst case scenario for cancer treatment.
The place is a shambles and the list of faults is long and many, but I’d start with the ED barely acknowledging you exist until the non refundable $440 dollars is in their accnt no matter the state of the patient, and being that was initial consultation I just knew it was going to be a long and painful experience….and I was correct.nnDo have to give a shout out to majority of nursing staff as they were fantastic.nnGenerally would avoid the place if possible, do not recommend.
