My husband had a hernia operation performed by Dr Richard Perry at St George's Hospital in Christchurch. 24 hours after his operation my husband was feeling very unwell and was vomiting frequently. He rang the St George hospital to explain his condition to a nurse. She was unconcerned by my husband's conditioned. She dismissed it and said that everyone reacted differently to the drugs administered during surgery and there was nothing to worry about. He rang the hospital a further 2 times as his conditioned had deteriorated during the 48 hours after his operation . Again he received the same useless platitudes. He was still vomiting and feeling a lot worse at midnight on Friday, so I drove him to the emergency department at the Christchurch hospital, arriving around 1am on a Saturday morning. It took a further 6 hours of agony for my husband to be seen and admitted to hospital before receiving some effective pain relief. It turned out, part of my husband's bowrl had been stitched during the hernia repair procedure causing a blockage. My husband did receive an apology from Richard Perry, the day after he was recovering from his second operation to fix the obstruction by a different surgeon. My husband and I both agree, the service from the staff at St George Hospital, when notified about his medical concerns after his operation, was unprofessional and very disappointing. dofferent Terrible after care service
On 11 Jan 2021 I have a colonoscopy performed by Dr Deborah Wright. As a short term visitor to Christchurch I didn't have anyone to collect me after the procedure and so I opted for the procedure without sedation. It was not painful or even uncomfortable at any time. It was interesting to be able to see a large TV screen showing inside my colon and the Dr and nursing staff were professional and friendly. The only slightly uncomfortable part of the whole process was the bowel cleanse the day before and on the morning which required fasting and drinking an orange flavoured powder, which didn't taste awful, mixed with water to clear out the bowel. Three to four hours after taking the solution, bowel movements were quite sudden, loose and watery, but that was expected. If I required a procedure in the future I would again choose to not to be sedated. It was fine, really. Perhaps if a patient was suffering with abdominal pain, a sedative would be preferable.
I was really worried about having a colonoscopy but I have to say the whole process was so much better that I could have hoped. The staff at Intus were so friendly and professional and my surgeon Ian went above and beyond to make me comfortable. At no stage did I feel exposed or uncomfortable and having a big screen to watch what the camera was seeing was a great way to occupy my mind. Lynley made my insurance claim so simple and the communication couldn't have been better. I was well informed through out. Thank you to everyone involved I won't be going anywhere else for my follow up in 5 years time. Cheers
