The main feature of Burston Reserve, at Parliament Place. A description of the sculpture is included in my pictures.
It is a beautiful and unique sculpture.
This large-scale folding scroll-like sculpture created by artists Susan Hewitt and Penelope Lee, is inspired by and designed to emulate the 260m long "Monster Petition" which was signed by 30,000 Victorian women over a period of six weeks in 1891 and calling for women to be granted the right to vote. The bluestone plinth on which it sits, represents the steps of Parliament House. The "Monster Petition" comprised of the signatures of the 30,000 Victoria women on pages glued to the sewn strips of calico 260 metres in length. It's an imposing sculpture in a commanding position on the small triangular Burston Reserve. People can engage with the works on many levels. It's visible to passengers walking by or on passing trams and vehicles, people can engage with the sculpture when within the park and they can even sit or lay on the sculpture itself. The sculpture was unveiled on 3rd December 2008 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of women's right to vote in Victoria.
I enjoy walking past here, after a nice nightly stroll in the gardens.
Didn't know this was a thing until today, interesting. I googled for more information.
