This was stunning, short stones throw to a spectacular beach, take a walk through historic settings to the fork in the path, which direction will you go? Through the grass covered dunes or the rocky path through the Forrest. Take the time to relax on the beach, enjoy the fire pit and flushing toilets. But remember to boil your water first if you want to drink from the taps.nnPerfect place to stay off the beaten track. Thanks DOC
Road was well maintained getting in. Sunset was pretty good but then the rains hit.. only a short walk to the beach, we couldn't see the glacier due to weather but I'd suspect the view would be nice. $10 cash at camp but $15 pp online to camp
Small hidden DOC campsite gem, book in advance..directly at the beach, you can fall asleep with the sound of waves in your ears.. good for tents and smaller campervans, the sunset is also eligible for pack watching.. small to moderate sandfly attack.. flushing toilets and kitchen shelter
Gillespies Beach Campsite is one of the most amazing places you could pitch a tent. On a good day, clear views of the stunning Southern Alps will make putting up with the aggressive sandflies all worth it - make sure you bathe in insect repellent prior to staying here.nnThe facilities here include two flushing toilets, two hand basins for general use, and a shelter which can be used for cooking. The beach is also only a short walk from the campsite, as well as many interesting mining relics of years gone by.
Excellent place to see the mountains. The beach was full of rocks and the water was rough but it was refreshing. There were alot of biting flies so bring the insect repellent. There was space to picnic either at tables or on the ground. The toilets were clean flush type which was nice. We were under the impression it was a free site, however there are fees upon arrival. The road in was winding and a little narrow, but its not to bad. We had a mid sized campervan and it was fine. There were sheep and deer on the road in so best to be careful especially if you come after dark like we did.
