Story

At Elephant House, we believe in providing our customers with the widest range of quality grocery products (familiar brands in Sri Lanka) and are constantly looking for new ways to offer mouth watering, tasty and nutritious homemade food at an affordable price. Not only food, we bring back you the memories of homeland by providing tri-lingual news papers, magazines, famous Sri Lankan Tele dramas (DVDs), Music CDs and movies.

Elephant House was originally established in Endeavour Hills in 2004 fulfilling a long-felt need for the Sri Lankan community in Melbourne. Due to increasing demand of fast moving consumer goods and take away foods Elephant House was shifted to the spacious and convenient current location (opposite Syndal Station, Glen Waverley) in 08th March, 2004.



In 11th March, 2009 Elephant House was revamped and re-launched under a new ownership with a broader vision of serving Sri Lankan, Indian and Asian community.

Elephant House is the most profound household name amongst the Sri Lankan community in Melbourne.

Horrible customer service. I asked about shipping boxes and she just answer my questions saying something like "rice". I just looked at her few seconds because I really didn't understand what she was saying...I asked again then she gave me the direction to find boxes. I asked about the shipment dates and she just pointed her finger to some papers hanging on the wall. She was frowning. The way she is behaving and looking at me like that I am going to buy things without money. The positive thing is I like the way they are displaying goods, easy to find things. Also, they have very delicious food. This message is for the owner. The way that girl behaves is not acceptable for customers. May be she is your relative or your own daughter but teach her some good customer service basic customer service and manners to do the job properly.
Excellent SriLankan grocery with way more Sri Lankan brands than other grocery chains such as MKS.. was quite surprised with the food on offer. The rice and curry was very good! And quite spicy! Have not tried the short eats or rolls.
Wanted to buy a packet of roasted curry powder. Shelf indicated that price was $6.30 but when scanned price was $6.75. Staff called up the owner but owner refuse to honour the lower shelf price and indicated shelf price was not updated. The price difference is not material but most shops would honour the shelf price. Not a good customer retention policy is my opinion. Plenty of other Sri Lankan shops around!
Great place for merchandise and Sri Lankan food but was disappointed with customer service when my vegetarian meal was packed with a huge chicken thigh. I was asked twice by the servers and clarified atleast twice that both meals were to be vegetarian. They clarified amoungst themselves too that both were to be vegetarian but still packed meat into the me. Its not very respectful to treat customers that way. Such a shame. I use to love this place.
What you get for $18 is terrible. This is my experience though on a Sunday for a takeaway chicken rice. I have seen better days a few years ago when the food was amazing
Never come back. I was on the queue to pay for my foods. Also wanted to buy rolls from the counter. There was only 4. I told to the seller I need 2 rolls. He was ready to pack. Just after one lady asked not to sell roles because she need them. Then the seller asked me to wait sometimes because it’s already gone . She entered to the store after me and still was doing grocery shopping. I feel so bad . I left the store thinking never go back . Hi I just editing my review because you not allow to continuous replies. Please make it as we can reply . For the every bad reviews you replied as “ don’t tell lies” . In my case please check your cameras first. She did not made any early order. She entered to the shop when some ppl in the queue including me. She just entered and asked the girl don’t sell 4 rolls it’s for me”. I was waiting to buy 2 rolls. That’s how you give priority to first customers. The Main thing I was entered to the shop was to buy short eats. Not groceries. But while I was waiting in the queue ,the shop became very quiet and that’s why I did some grocery shopping. After finished I went back to the queue and that lady was entered to the shop. If you guys don’t know about priorities to early customer, why you need a queue in your shop. Also please learn from other shop how to reply for the reviews without loosing customers. I hate your language
The staff working here are extremely rude and unhelpful. We ordered food once for guests we were having and they didn't place the order correctly hence we didn't have enough food for the people that night. They were not apologetic at all. Basically told us to cook something instead given the circumstances. On other occasions you come in and they either totally ignore you while having long chats on the phone while they serve you or disappear for 5-10 mins at a time to the back room. Once I picked a 5kg bag of rice and as I was walking around choosing my other shopping, asked if I could keep the bag of rice near the counter as I was going to purchase it and couldn't carry it for a long time- and was told no. There's plenty of other Sri Lankan shops around that offer the same products without the attitude. Reply to owner- there is no reply button on your response. Sorry about that. It's happened over time.in the last 1 year and beyond. I can't recall exact days but in the future I will get this information to you. Please send an email address I can contact you on.
This shop has a good collection. But way pricier. For example, Nipuna keeri samba 5kg packet is $30 here but in mks spices, it's only $18see attached bill from mks. I mean 2 or 3 dollars you can imagine this is like double the price. Also, the lady owner is rude and over her head. Oneday I was browsing and one guy was taking photos may be for future reference. And this lady owner came and scolded him which I think was a bit too much because the guy was apologetic from the start but she kept on scolding him. She said things like "dont forget this is Australia and not Sri Lanka " while the guy was really apologetic. Geniune Australians forgive and forget so guess who showed their true colors. Reply to owner: The policy I understand but keep on scolding while the guy is apologizing, it was a bit too much. Regarding prices, please ditch your so called supplier and buy from MKS and re-sell. You can give it for a far lesser price lol.
Sri Lankan grocery store with a variety of Sri Lankan food items, ranging from Sri Lankan spices to frozen or dried vegetables from Sri Lanka. They offer cooked Sri Lankan meals for take away too. Only issue I had was that the service was not quick.
THE place to purchase all and everything Sri Lankan. Well stocked and quite reasonably priced.
