Great place to stay when you're in town. Central and walking distance to anywhere. Rooms are kept clean and the staff do a great job keeping them so. Front of house staff are always helpful. Absolutely no cooking facilities in rooms except for a kettle. Everything is geared towards the restaurant. Dinners are good but the breakfast buffet is quite average. Bland would be the best word. Flavourless is another. The hot menu needs an overhaul, although the continental is decent. Certainly not worth the $35 price.
I booked a room for a work trip after my coworker said they enjoyed their stay during a work trip and I’m glad I was influenced.nnIt’s my first time in Whangārei and I found it very easy to locate the hotel. Check-in was quick and easy and there was a lot of off-street parking! My room itself was very spacious, modern and well lit. I was impressed by how many toiletries and towels that were supplied for me in the bathroom.nnI usually find it difficult to fall asleep when I’m away from home I’m a bit of a homebody who hates being away from her dog, but I found it very easy to fall asleep here. I believe it was a mixture of the pillows being perfect I contemplated bringing my own pillow as I usually get a sore neck from hotel and air BnB pillows the comfy bed and the welcoming environment.nnThere were two occasions within 24 hours of my stay where my hotel card played up, but the reception staff were very efficient and helpful - I’m happy they verified my identity before fixing my card as it made me feel extra safe.nnWhen I came back to my hotel room on my second day I was pleasantly surprised to see my bed had been made, rubbish was taken and my towels had been refreshed. I wasn’t expecting anyone to come in my room or do anything for me during my stay and I really appreciated the surprise I’m glad I didn’t leave my room littered with clothes.nnMy only negative would be someone’s alarm going off early in the morning for long periods. They had it set to vibrate and I could hear the vibrations in my room - I’m not sure if they were snoozing their alarms or there were multiple ones set. I will note that voices don’t travel between the walls or floors, but somehow alarm vibrations do. The only time I heard people was when they were talking and walking past my room.nnI’ll definitely be booking in at the Distinction for any future Whangārei trips work or personal. I really love the location, quality and ease of everything. All of my friends and coworkers I’ve sent photos to have commented on how nice my room looked.nnShoutout to whoever chose the pillows, the giant mirrors and all the other furniture as well as the house keeping staff who do a beautiful job!
We were in Whangarei for a wedding. They recommended this hotel and glad we took it.nGood location, inspite of been an hotel it was Clean. Serviced every day with plenty of toiletries.nGreat and very obliging staff. Amy at the reception and another lady in the restaurant were exceptional. She was not there when we checked out, so couldn't get her name. Those 2 should be commended for their efficiency.nThough didn't meet, the chef, is to be thanked for catering to my dairy free needs,nThank you again and will recommend to those travelling to whangarei NZ.
I recently stayed at The distinction Hotel on 7th night and unfortunately, my experience was quite disappointing due to multiple issues — both with room access and misleading information about the room I booked.nnUpon my arrival, I was handed my room key, but after walking approximately 50–100 steps to reach my room, the key did not work. I had to return to the reception for assistance. Eventually, the staff came to help and got it working.nnWhen I entered the room, I noticed that the **bath** — which was clearly listed under the facilities for the *Double Superior King Room* I booked — was missing. One of the main reasons I chose this room was because it mentioned both a *shower and bath*, and I was specifically looking forward to using a bath during my stay.nnWhen I raised this with the reception manager, I was told that rooms with baths were all occupied and that it was an issue with Booking.com or HotelBeds, and not their fault. He also stated that on their website, the Double Superior King Room does not guarantee a bath. I understand there may be discrepancies between booking platforms and hotel systems, but as a customer, I relied on the information provided on Booking.com when making my decision. If I had known the room did not include a bath, I would have booked a different room at a lower rate — I paid $254 specifically expecting the bath.nnTo make matters worse, I faced repeated issues with the room key. After my initial access issue, the key failed again when I returned later. I had to walk back to reception Room 147 is quite far, and despite the staff saying to call them if it happened again, no one picked up when I did. On the **third attempt**, I had to go back again, already exhausted from work. Finally, someone came to help and got it working — but it was extremely frustrating and tiring.nnOverall, the experience was disappointing and not what I expected for the price paid. I felt let down and inconvenienced by both the misleading room listing and the repeated access key issue
Room had large stains on carpet. Not something you want to see paying $240 a night. We smelt a strong smell coming from shower drain hole.nThe food at the restaurant was a little pricey but good and we really enjoyed it.nOverall the hotel is a bit tired and could do with carpet replaced. I would give it 3.5 stars.
