Unimpressed would be the one word I’d use to sum up my visit. I found there to be a severe lack of sauce on my pizza, on top of the fact the mushrooms used were very obviously on there way to the bin. For the casual style service and quality of food, the prices are insane. I had a taste of my partners lasagne and found it to be incredibly salty. Pizza is a hard one to mess up but definitely found myself leaving most of mine uneaten. Would definitely recommend Universal restaurant over here, as there menu is identical, just reasonably priced & better quality food & service.
Spent an evening on Lygon in Carlton, started with tapas and a few drinks which didn't satiate us for dinner. So we went on the hunt for some Italian food, we were fortunate to be walking past this venue right as a table was clearing. The gentleman waiter was excellent and seated as right away, explained things clearly as we went through the menu. They were very busy as to be expected on Saturday night, the pizzas we ordered were delicious and staff were helpful for any requests inside the store. We'll be back to try other dishes on the menu for sure.
5/5 for my experience here. Came on a whim with my best friend, and felt why not try something close to a genuine Italian experience. We were most definitely not disappointed. We asked for their recommendations for both a Pizza and a Pasta, We were recommended a Sciliana, and we loved it. The pizza we received was a Paesana and it was incredible. That's all I can say. The experience was incredible, the staff was fantastic and very friendly and accomodating. From fhe advice on how to eat the food and savor every little taste. To go with our food, we had a humble Bélena traditional red wine, 2021. Lorenzo, a kind and passionate elderly fellow explained some history to us regarding the desert we had, the Terramiso, and it was quite a learning experience. To end the experience, the restaurant was kind enough to let us try the Limonn cello to refresh our palate after all the for all the food we had. __________ In summary: The service was great. The recommendations were excellent. The food, was amazing. Definitely come here for a date, bring your family or even your child. You will love it.
Not our first time in this restaurant, and we will come here again. Unfortunately after covid a lot of restaurants’ food quality has dropped but not in Cavallino. The portions are huge and the food is delicious. Honestly, I think the bad reviews are left by competitors
Sub par in my opinion We stopped in for dessert and the Tiramisu lacked lushness and body The outdoor service seems confused, we watched many plates get delivered to wrong tables of other patrons because the table numbers had no system It’s also a pay at the register which is pretty old school especially when they have hawkers desperately trying to get you to dine there However the outdoor heating was good and atmosphere very traditional Lygon Not disappointed but not raving about it either
I have read some of the reviews just out of curiosity and some reviews are absolutely disgusting, this is in my opinion the best Italian restaurant in Lygon. I come here regularly once-twice a month with my girlfriend and just recently with my mates for my 21st and have also been coming here since I was a little kid. I have tried other restaurants in lygon and every single time it just brings me back to Cafe Cavallino. Delicious food, fantastic customer service they’re super polite and accommodating, old school just the way I like it. I don’t think I’ll ever stop coming to Cafe Cavallino I will be forever a loyal customer
Very good brunch food and very reasonable prices
Edited - Response: Nope, you've got the wrong people. The food here is not good enough to justify the employees yelling at their customers - I'm not going to recommend this place to anyone just for that aspect alone. Sure, I understand it gets busy - work staff get out under a lot of pressure I've been there but you're supposed to know how to manage and compose yourself during these situations, not take it out on the customer. It is a privilege to receive the patronage that you do in such an iconic location - don't ruin that. Secondly, I am sure my partner and I have gotten food poisoning from here. We ordered the Capri pizza and noticed when it arrived there was a slight "mildew" smell coming off of it. Let it cool down, give it another whiff, and the smell was still there. The pizza tasted okay, so we of course proceeded to eat it, especially since it was $24. That same night, me and my partner are vomiting up everything. We didn't consume anything else within that time frame. This is quite bad - I'm already in the process of contacting the Food Safety Unit of Vic to see what on Earth happened there. Finally, is anybody else seeing the owner responding to the negative comments here with hostility? Why have a restaurant and allow for it to be publicly criticised and open to reviews if you're just gonna trash every negative comment you receive? All these points show me that this establishment should not be up and running. A family business that may have once been successful, but no longer is due to their unwillingness to change or improve.
My family and I had lunch here on the weekend and found the service to be excellent the staff friendly, prompt and nothing a bother. The pizzas we ordered were probably the best we had eaten thanks to James and Eduardo. We will be back.
Staff are nice but the food is very average. Pizzas are far better elsewhere. I think the times moved on in Melbourne and the quality improved around the city. Cavallino hasn’t kept up.
