Fantastic experience. Came to a stylish restaurant for a birthday. The food and service were wonderful, and to top it off the entire restaurant and owner sang happy birthday. It just made it THAT MUCH MORE MEMORABLE! Thankyou so very very much! 😊

Ordinary would be a complement. Awesome location. Service mediocre. Breakfast menu basic. Toast without butter. Poached eggs done in a poacher. Who does that? Could be one of Hervey Bay's premier restaurants. Sadly it is far far from it.

Upon review of a menu in our accommodation and recommendations by locals. We chose to go to Cafe Balaena for dinner. Unfortunately we were not impressed. My husband and I both had the rib fillet - one with mushroom sauce and the other with a reef topper. The steak was okay, but obviously cooked in the oven and only charred at the end, which ended up being tough. My reef topper was frozen seafood and my husband’s mushroom sauce appeared prepackaged and not very flavoursome. An additional $9 salad did not impress us at all. We did not feel welcome as the waitresses were highly stressed as they were very busy and the manager or owner (maybe), was only focussed on selected customers and only came up to us upon our leaving and asked how our meals were and we said they were average - he then quickly ran away to attend to other customers and did not ask any questions. Overall we were not impressed with Cafe Balaena and have already spread the word of our dissatisfaction.

The best steak ever. Cooked to perfection. Again. Local scallops and many other local treats makes Cafe Balaena my must go to in Hervey Bay. Great atmosphere and awesome staff makes for a really enjoyable night

Staff were efficient and attentive. The view is delightful. The breakfast menu caught our attention as being different without pretentiousness (and turned out to be very tasty). They were accommodating of our pram. The coffee selection is worthy of a trendy Melbourne Cafe.
