Not sure why this place as such a low rating. This was one of the best hostels I stayed in while I was traveling around New Zealand. The owner is super friendly and genuinely wants to know what you're all about. Our double room was clean and had a sink and hairdryer IN the room. The bed was the second most comfortable bed we slept in while in NZ. There's also free breakfast...cereal for some reason is delicious when you're traveling! The hostel also has a nice lounge and funky music playing during the day. The terrace is a great place to hang out and it is a short walk to downtown. Great vibe and a great stay!
Horrible experience. Couldn't sleep at all because backpackers partying, yelling, laughing out loud and slamming doors ALL NIGHT. This didn't stop until 6 am when we gave up sleeping and just decided to leave. Also, too many people living there long-term, so shared rooms are full of personal belongings and they're generally messy. Kitchen was dirty. And the freaking yelling and door slams! Don't come here if you're planning to have any sleep. At least they got some fun! Only good things are the receptionist was friendly, and the bed was comfortable.
I've stayed at quite a few hostels in central Wellington, and Worldwide is by far the one of I've found to be the most pleasant. First, let's get the basic stuff out of the way. It's location is pretty central 5 minute walk from Cuba Street, yet it's a much more quiet part of central Wellington, quite residential. The hostel is cleaned daily including the bathrooms, I've never taken issue with cleanliness. I especially appreciate that the bathrooms always have hand towels and handsoap. The kitchen has everything you need, and though it can get a little messy at times, it's usually more than fine. The hostel does advertise having free WiFi, it is unfortunately quite unreliable most of the time which is usually the case in NZ hostels. However there is a free to use computer, that can be used at anytime, that does have a reliable connection. If having a decent WiFi connection for your own devices is a priority, I would then advise finding a different hostel. Finally I find the dorms to be more than acceptable, they have good comfortable mattresses, warm duvets, and even draws! What I personally love about the hostel is the homely feel of the place, it feels more like staying in a villa with friends than staying at a hostel. Probably due to the fact that the hostel seems to be a large house that has been converted into hostel. Moreover it's very easy to make friends and talk to everyone. The lounge area especially is dangerously cosy, it's just like your average family home living room, nice comfy couches and big screen TV. It's easy to lose track of time and watch TV for hours on end. Probably also because they have Sky TV with tons of channel. I would also like to point out that the owners are genuinely nice and always very helpful. All in all, I would highly recommend the hostel to anyone staying in Wellington on a budget, as long as having a reliable internet connection is not vital. It's vibrant, friendly, comfortable and clean.
The reviews of this place upset me. I stayed here for 3 weeks and it was a treat. Yeah it has social weekends and people coming and going, but I found lots of long termers who loved the place. -Every piece of accomodation was accounted for; kitchen; bunks, shower pro tip, use male downstairs shower -Wendy the owner is a lovely lady - Myself and ~6 others lived here for 3+ weeks before getting flats in the city. We all stay in contact and could not speak higher of this backpackers.
Nice backpacker, really close to the cdb and in a street with enough room for your car coupon parking - not free . The bedroom was nice with a really good bed, a sink, one towel each and a hairdryer. The place was clean but unfortunately the people staying there seems to be rude and uneducated I mean the backpackers, not the staff who was friendly, so everything went dirty in a blink, especially the kitchen. There is not a good mood in it, people where slamming door and yelling at night. Otherwise this was a nice place to stay, maybe the kitchen is to small for 40 guest. I think this place deserve a four star rate but I stick to three because they say free wifi and give you access code, but it impossible to connect to their network, too much people using it perhaps or bad hardware, I only connect once at night and the broadband was like 10kb/s I mean common whe are in the capital here ? . Again, the staff was friendly and efficient.
MINUS 5 stars would be adequate! By far the worst 2 nights we had in New Zealand. Everything was loud, dirty and partyish all night. The condition of the kitchen was disgustingly dirty. The owners didn't seem to care much. They just GIFTED AWAY my favourite beach towel! NEVER EVER AGAIN!!
Backpacker well situated, clean and appointed. Big double room with a sink and several furniture for our styfs. However kitchen and dining room too little for so many people. Wifi is free but too slow : for us is like it was inexistent access to our blog impossible so nor to send photos. It’s not correct to say “free wifi” if we can’t use it easily with our laptop nad impossible to put our USB stick on the free computer. The owner are too kind and some people know that : most of travellers never cleaned after cooking like young children and that’s disrespectful for the owners and almost for the other travellers, cleaning after them. And finally, even if it’s one of the cheapest in the city, be in the capital doesn’t justify the price in other big city you can find cheaper for the same quality ; in Wellington all backpackers are overpriced, that a shame.
Stayed here in 2012 and I am still outraged of the horrible experience I had I thought it necessary to make sure people know how horribly this place is run. Just because this is a "backpackers" doesn't mean you let people do what they want, you are unhygienic, and completely rude to your own guests. Check out the YHA it's the best backpackers in Wellington.
Great people, relaxed environment and top class management. Spacious living space for the social long termers living there. My personal best hostel experience
Dirty filthy hostel exactly how I like it. More of a share house where you can find friends and travelmates than the fancy "look at the phone" hostel. A little island of hope. Thanks
