Whale Island also known as Moutohora Island is a wild life sanctuary administered by the Department of Conservation and local Ngati Awa Maori. Guided tours to the Island are run by Diveworks Charters who have over 20 years experience with the Island and its restoration . Home to Kiwi, Saddleback, Tui, Kakariki and the dinosaur lizard the Tuatara.
"A 4+ hour guided scenic walk - tour includes close encounters with NZ bird life, geckos, skinks and tuatara. Kiwi also inhabit the Island. We have over 25 years close involvement with the Island's restoration. You will hear of the history of the Island. Tour can include swim, and a circumnavigation of the Island spotting friendly Kekeno seals and other marine life. There is a quarantine check prior to departure."
