Wellington Cable Car

About

Wellington Cable Car is Wellington's most 'moving' attraction and is a favourite among locals and visitors alike.

Story

In 2017, we are celebrating our 115 years of service to the City of Wellington. A favourite of locals and visitors alike, the cable car allows easy access from its terminal on Lambton Quay in the city centre to the top entrance of the Botanic Garden and the Kelburn lookout. Three intermediate stations allow for easy access to local residential and business addresses and at Salamanca access to the Kelburn campus of Victoria University.

The terminus at Kelburn is adjacent to the Cable Car Museum (free) which houses two of the original cable cars. A level two minute walk in the Gardens takes you to Space Place (Observatory and Planetarium) and a free shuttle operates regularly from outside the Cable Car Museum to Zealandia. The Kelburn Village is only five minutes away and the Botanic Garden has a number of interesting downhill walks which take you back to the city centre in about 40 minutes.

"The iconic Wellington Cable Car is the only funicular railway that is still running in New Zealand. Operated since 1902, running between the heart of the city and the Suburb of Kelburn. Enjoy a quick historic journey to the top of the Cable Car to see nearby attractions: the Cable Car Museum free entry, Space Place, Botanic Garden free entry and Zealandia via free shuttle."

Just another ride... We were thrilled about the ride in the Cable car. It's cool to know that this Cable car has been around for 120 years, an icon of Wellington City. It is really a ride on an antique but I'm sure there were many refurbishment and maintenance. We weren't sure the timing so we were pretty late when we started our ride and we just miss the museum by 4 minutes. They closed at 5pm. But we were able to catch some activities at the Space Place at Carter Observatory Science museum and saw some cool stuffs. A 150 years old telescope is really the main highlight for our trip up the hill. Unfortunately, to be able to see the beautiful night sky, we have to prepare to walk down the hill as the Cable car cease its operation at 7pm. And the journey down hill can be very challenging for some. It gets very cold in the night in Wellington. I must state that the view on the top of the hill is picturesque. This is really a worthwhile one trip of a lifetime kind of thing and I don't think I will ride the Cable car again.
Nice little ride up a hill to a view point. The tunnels have colored lights. There is a cafe at the top as well. It costs $9 round trip. There is a ticket window and you can pay cash or credit card. Locals can use their bus card.
Nice short ride from the botanic garden to the city center! Great view on the start en fun lighting in the tunnels. If you are close, be sure to check it out and save some time and energy with climbing up!
What a quirky little tourist attraction, bang in the middle of Wellington CBD. At $9 per adult return and multi-options for families etc, the 609 metre ride to the top comprises 3 stops taking just a few minutes. Once at the top, which is ~119 metres higher than the start, there are many activities including short/long walks, several observatories, space place, museum and cafe. Wellington's weather is monitored and reported on from this location.
Fun throw back and a nice way to see some of the city. Coming from San Francisco, cable cars aren’t new but this one certainly was and very well done even if it’s a short ride. Good view of the city from the top of course. Took it both ways near the end of the day and just barely in time to see a bit of the museum up top but taking it one way up and walking the park back down seems like a great way to spend a few hours on the right day.
The cable car ride is an absolute must if you're in Wellington, even if only for the afternoon. Two trams go up and down all day which means there's only ever 5 minute wait at either end. The views, the art murals but mostly the LED lit tunnels make this a unique experience. Trams are immaculately presented with retro charm in wood floors and vinyl seats. Our drivers were approachable, chatty and friendly. Botanical gardens, a planetarium and a cafè all provide bonus extras at the summit.
Quick and comfortable, less than 5 minute wait for the tram each time. Cheap if you have a Snapper card, even without the price is reasonable. Gorgeous views both from the tram and from the station at the top. Lovely sightseeing place, with easy access to the Botanical Gardens from the top.
The cable car was an enjoyable experience however it was over very quickly. For the price we paid I would of expected at least a small commentary on the way down to explain some local history passing through each stop, especially for those out of town or from overseas who are visiting Wellington for the very first time I would suggest that would be very nice to incorporate in the experience
Good and clean. Short ride to the top. Good views when you get there. Beautiful botanic garden at the top, so we walked down. So only buy a single ticket. One of those things that you must do when visiting a new city for the first time. Wellington is a compact and pleasant city.
Pretty good ride... Calm and the lights do give an eyegasm... It has a good connection between old and new tech... Definitely worth going... The staff was super nice and friendly.
