Story

Waitakere Hospital is a general hospital located in the Henderson/Lincoln suburb area of Waitakere City, part of the Auckland area of New Zealand. It is administered by the Waitemata District Health Board and provides health services to approximately 560,000 residents throughout North Shore, Waitakere and Rodney districts of Auckland. It has 76 medical beds and 6 coronary care beds, a maternity unit and a surgical unit with 2 operating theatres. The hospital’s Emergency Department is open to both adult and paediatric patients 24 hours a day, seven days a week,.HistoryIn 1945 the original Waitakere Maternity Hospital was a small building in Te Atatu. The idea of a new hospital was raised that year, but it was another ten years before a site was found for the ‘North Western Hospital’.In the ensuing years a geriatric block was built and the site also became a base for community home health and support services, child disability services and for health services to school children - public health nurses, hearing and vision testing, school dental services.HealthWest, a private primary health provider, was as of 2006 in negotiations with the hospital to be allowed to provide fee-paying patients with medical services in the hospital. While this proposed measure did not go forward as of mid-2007, it highlighted the fact that even after the NZ$60 million upgrading to general hospital status, the facility was still facing shortages, like many other public health facilities in New Zealand. In the first five months of 2008, the emergency department of the hospital was forced into partial closure 52 times, and has still not officially become a 24/7 facility. This is being blamed on short-staffing and financial constraints of the District Health Board.

Saved my life, thank you. I couldn't imagine the stress you nurses go through, the stories you hear and how desensitizing all of that can be. I was admitted late February and felt most comfortable in the Emergency Unit room. Some nurses would stop by and have a quick word with me to cheer me up. It makes a difference. There was a blonde nurse in that unit, I can't remember her name.. But she really helped calm me down and reassured me that everything would be okay. I spent a whole week and a bit there. The photo I attached was me pointing at the room I was in and being grateful I got out. You're all doing god's work, thank you again. I appreciate life a lot more.
My 7 year old had surgery, from start to finish we had the best care! The receptionist, the nurses, surgeon and staff were all absolutely amazing and so helpful, kind and caring. Hospitals get a lot of stick but our experience was brilliant here! Thank you!!
I was recently admitted at Waitakere. I'll say that this hospital is far better than Taranaki base where I was earlier. All the staff are professional, friendly and helpful. I'm really grateful for the experience I had. The nurses were very kind, considerate. They talk so nice, So I'm just thankful and I couldn't have asked for better. Thank you and god bless y'all!
I literally died here on my second visit nurses are always cool, 1st time ever the doctor was competent and friendly and I didn't require a nappy as nobody tried to test drugs on me. Good place to be if you attempt to eat the food
Went to Waitakere Hospital because the health line nurse had recommended I go. I was experiencing racing heart, cold body, Blackouts, Blurred vision and breathing issues and a few other things. All apparent signs of anaemia I had already done a test a few weeks beforehand and my iron levels were low then as well. Go to the Waitakere hospital let them know why I was there and honestly I felt as if they were disappointed I was there. A nurse came in and asked “Why are you here?” I explained and her stare was so mean.. I didn’t explain properly so she asked again “No, no why did you come here?” I explained properly this time. The nurse told me to “Calm down, Just don’t move” when I was following her instructions that required me to move around and would talk under her breath “Yes, yes, yes” or she would just ignore me every time I tried to talk to her. And would give me major side eye which made me feel so uncomfortable and she literally told me to look the other way while she attached the ecg. I had a mask on already and had passed my Covid test when first entering so I felt like a literal germ being there. The nurse asked me “Is he ok being here?” I said yes he’s my friend.. However, I didn’t realise she was going to pull my gown up and reveal my body. That happened so fast I couldn’t ask what she was doing with that machine first. I work in healthcare as well as a Physio assistant in a retirement village.. I know it’s not half of what our nurses at hospitals go through but I know the way I was treated isn’t right and wouldn’t want it for anyone else. If it was something I done while I was there I’m truly sorry!
If I can rate it with a 0 I would, I absolutely hate this hospital and it's stuff, the nurses and their attitudes are unbelievable, I've been sick from the flu for quite sometimes and the reason why I don't go here is because they just make you wait in the front then the nurses just take you at the back and make you wait there again. I was having chills and fever and I've been there for 2 hours so I rang the bell and asked for something to calm my fever down, she said no because I just recently had panadol and I told her I had panadol at home at 12 noon this is 9pm here at the hospital and I'm not feeling OK and I have headaches chills and fever and body aches. I just hope people going here can consider some other places but then again this emergency for our district juts disgusting . The doctor came with the same nasty attitude aswell looks at me can't really walk and still sends me home.
Was late for 1st appointment as all mobility car parks were full so had to drive around looking for a car park but the nurse on reception 2 was lovely and understanding which was matched by the same kindness shown by the physio and dietician shame the parking /ticket machine was not working
Best hospital I have ever been to. Friendly amazing nurses, great drs, so clean.
The staff are great. Had my xrays. It was so efficient that my parking was FREE. How's that for timing
The Waitakere birth unit was incredible. The on site midwives and doctors were so present, knowledgeable, attentive and reassuring. Making our birth experience as good as it could be. The rooms had everything available which we needed.
