I would love to give 5 stars for its extensive size but the maintenance is rather average and the signage is shocking. We flew from Australia and made it there late afternoon after any staff were working. But surely you can locate a grave you have the location for!! NO YOU CANT. There were no plot numbers anywhere. Row numbers were all over the place and missing. And different entrances have no information at all. What a dog’s breakfast our visit was. We never located our grave in the end. Ridiculous! Staff there should be ashamed of themselves.
It may the resting on lace for Soo many for so long.. but it's also such an amazing place to go for a walk.nTake in the history of the headstones, the way the place is laid out...nRemember those the faught for us all.nGreat to take your dog or family for a walk.nnDef recommend.
Waikumete Cemetery was established in 1886 and is the final resting place for over 70,000 people. The Chapel of Faith in the Oaks was built in 1886 as a mortuary chapel and was used until the larger chapel was built in 1952. It is available for hire for religious services.nnWaikumete is home to a number of prominent historical areas including the Erebus Memorial, Holocaust Memorial, NZ Influenza Epidemic memorial and the ANZAC Cenotaph.
Nice and quiet in the morning. Plenty of parking on the road in front of the gate. Lawns mowed. Nice and clean.
Largest cemetary in Auckland. It can be nice to take a walk through here and reflect. So many different sections and cultures really makes you think about the diverse makeup of our city and how it came to be. Grounds are kept fairly well and there's always some homeless bruddas in the bushes to chat to if you get lonely. Also a great place to learn how to drive initially. Many locations to practice hill starts in a manual as well as parking parallel to mourners etc.
