I was born in Canada in 1965 half Native Inuit and raised in the suburbs of Auckland New Zealand by my grandparents and family there- until returning to Canada for highschool- and now live in the USA. Most of my family are deceased now- and I only just found my grandfather's grave photo of. He died in our home in Glen Eden- with the solace and sorrow of our family who loved him dearly- and honored his pride of his service in the British Navy of his homeland of Cardiff, Wales, United Kingdom- and buried him here in the Military Cemetery. It is all as I remembered it so vividly of when he died when I was eleven years old. I so appreciate to have found photograph record of his grave site here. Rest in peace Grandpa Davies- in your paradise and the most beautiful and peaceful country in the world.
It may the resting on lace for Soo many for so long.. but it's also such an amazing place to go for a walk. Take in the history of the headstones, the way the place is laid out... Remember those the faught for us all. Great to take your dog or family for a walk. Def recommend.

What a place! We were literally blowin away at the size of this historic beautiful cemetery. New & old graves, we just had to visit the older side, has that airy/spooky vibe which we loved. Much respect. Will definitely be back! A+
Not the usual place you would expect a review for but I do visit the War Memorial ex service person you see on a regular basis. Have taken to walking the dog here as its quite and vast. The other people I see joggers, dog walkers or visitors to family graves are always courteous. The cars that drive through are nice and slow and also courteous. There is a lot of history here. Not just the soldiers graves / memorial; but early European settlers and the mass grave to the flu out break at the start of the 20 century.
My Polish grandfather lies in Narcissus Drive, the first 46 years in an unmarked grave. It now bears a simple headstone which I hope causes the wanderer to pause and reflect on the ordeal of Poland's Roman Catholics during WWII. Given his tragic life, it is comforting to know his journey ended in a peaceful valley within the cemetery, nestled among mature trees with a glimpse of the city beyond. It is uplifting to sit nearby under the shade of an old eucalyptus listening to the tuis as they dart and dive the tree-clad slopes, the sounds of the city a distant hum.
Waikumete cemetery and crematorium covers 108 hectares and has over 70,000 resting places. It is the largest in NZ and one of the largest in the Southern Hemisphere. It is always well looked after with the flower beds and grass regularly maintained. It is a place for quiet contemplation and it is always a pleasure to visit there. The ANZAC Dawn service is held there and attracts a large crowd of people. The cemetery also caters for Mausoleums and has an area set aside for building individual structures. Thank you to Management and staff for the way they look after the final resting places for thousands of people.
Great large cemetery full of local history and wonderful garden's.
Great site - historical location. Large public licenced amenity. People are dying to get there. Phenomenal park-like facility exquisitely developed and maintained. Undulating hills and beautiful trees and gardens attract dog walkers, runners and tourists in addition to mourners and visitors. Friendly, helpful day staff are proud contributors to the greater community. The annual RSA event - dawn parade 6am each ANZAC Day.
