A most rewarding experience for those wanting to encounter our rare wildlife without to much effort. Firstly a pleasant ocean voyage, and then an abundance of birdlife and other critter to find on the many easy tracks. Good swimming beaches too.
If visiting Auckland or even if you live in Auckland ,Tiritiri Matangi Island is a must go to. Considering what it was 50 odd years, practically treeless. 20,000 planted trees later and plenty of bird life. What a transformation.
You can feel the spring in the air. With the flowers blooming, there are more nectar for birds. They are singing loudly and putting on a show.
Beautiful island and the guides were absolutely great, full of knowledge. The volunteers have done an amazing job of creating this bird sanctuary
Amazing island to explore. Great swimming spot and the birds are incredible. So many spots to sit and have lunch with a view
Very dense bird life. Saw plenty of tui, bellbirds, kakariki, hihi, saddleback, etc. Got to hear, but not see a kokako, which was a highlight. Also came across two ruru sunning themselves on the side of the track believe it or not. Some nice swimming spots at and around the wharf, definitely bring your togs. Despite being boxing day, was not overly crowded, especially not at the northern end of the island. Tracks will be fine for most people to walk. Was very hot though - bring plenty of water. Thank you to the volunteers for all your hard work!
Stunning island. You can have a guided tour or go about the island yourself. Ferry from Auckland leaves once a day so gives you a full day to explore. Worth noting there is no shops on the island so you need to take your essentials with you on the ferry. Plenty of nice quiet areas to sit and enjoy the weather, the wildlife, watch the world pass by. Plenty of walking routes to take. Photographers paradise here to be fair. Definitely recommend it
Amazing day tour with lots of birds to see, but also excellent information provided by volunteers! And wonderful landscapes, too. Next time I will definitely stay longer.
Loved every minute I spent on the island. Beautiful scenic and forest track. And Crystal clear water to enjoy after long hours of moving around the island. My only problem was the fact that we had to round up for a good 10mins or more to get everyone for the briefing. It was quite annoying as we had spent 70mins on the ferry already and couldn't wait to explore. Maybe a briefing could have been included on the ferry to the island instead. But all in all, an amazing and wonderful trip.
Run by volunteers, a day out to this incredible sanctuary is just amazing. We did a guided tour, definitely worth it. Passionate conservationists that are making a real positive impact.
