Terrible , worst case scenario is drop out and never go back to the same university again . If I'm going to give you three chances from BA through to PHD you are advised to not choose this university for any of the three options listed here . In terms of accommodation I would advise against international students picking any of the recommendations associated with the university including but not limited to the ones around the area with street numbers around 100s , even if close to the Business school or otherwise it is not worth the costs all things considered . Best attributes is that location is nice and convenient to martial arts school and avocado scrap bins in the kitchenettes not available through the highly convoluted campus maps with no possibility of finding a way out , and a suitable advisor to enlighten you on the issues requiring your attention . Absolutely disgusted by my experiences throughout my journeys with auckland university and regardless of any reputable teaching staff as advertised not worth $50 .
I have nothing but bad things to say about this place. I was there in the early 90s. Politically correct is the most Apt phase. I did not get a good education at all. Though I passed. It really was an eye opener. I was better for it though, the 4 years I spent there were formative In that I NEVER want to go back to that way of thinking again - thinking FOR somebody else. Do yourself a favour. Save 4 years AND more money that you can shake a stick at and travel or start a business. It makes more sense.
Prospective students should avoid this university at all costs. The only reason someone would come to this university is 1 living in Auckland and has strong reasons to stay with family 2 postgraduates that found a very good supervisor for their masters or doctorate degree with plentiful funding in their field. As an unfortunate alumni, I wish to pass my experience to those who have yet to decide so they can steer clear. I sincerely want you to think thoroughly, for your physical and mental wellbeing, and your future careers. 1 Entrenched institutional racism. Any admission processes that involve interviews e.g. especially and particularly MBChB, are a black-box operation that are ulteriorly designed to achieve a political purpose, to purely undermine academic meritocracy and unlawfully discriminate. In a private institution, 100% through private donations or trusts, it is okay, it is not the public purse. But last I checked, at least a third of the funding are through Government as tuition grants, meaning taxpayer money are involved. If it is funded by the taxpayer, then shouldn't it be subjected strictly to the Bill of Rights, that embed the principles of equality and freedom from discrimination, for all individuals of New Zealand. And to ensure this, all processes need to be transparent, recorded thoroughly for regular external audits and applicants have the right to appeal, including to a third party adjudicant. Every University official involved in the processes needed to be vetted, tested for cultural competency and conflict of interests. Admission panels as a group need to be vetted to ensure that its composition and any conflict of interests does not disadvantage the applicant. Unfortunately, University of Auckland does everything contrary to this. Interviews claims to be objective, but cannot safeguard against subjectivity. No passage for appeal of decisions, particularly interviews. No record of interviews kept for audits. No audits of admission processes from third-party or the public. How can the University of Auckland defend itself from accusations of trying to manipulate and achieve a racial quota in yearly intake cohorts, to mimic the racial makeup of the nation? It can deny this but why not conduct some fair research? Isn't it simple to compare the cohort makeups: composition of those that would purely be admitted by their own merits without external influences e.g. third party aptitude tests and grades vs. composition of those that are admitted after taken into account of these admission interviews - compare the racial makeups, then make an evidence based conclusion about what is happening. Why would you pay expensive tuition only to be treated contrary to the spirit of the Bill of Rights. You can work hard day and night, but because a black-box operation, left you empty handed, cheated and disgusted. 2 Arbitrary. Grading and marking are arbitrary based on the whims of your lecturers, your course supervisors. They can be as easy or as harsh as they like and nothing you can do about it. And again, you cannot appeal, even if you believe there is a mistake and can justify it. If you are trying for honours, this can make a huge difference on your future academic pathways. The University does not care because you are only a cash cow, that comes and goes, depletes and replenishes every year with new students. So choose an institution that is reputable and fair, not arbitrary and indifferent. Your hard work merit better treatment and better recognition. 3 Fluctuating quality of lectures and poor tuition system. Unlike some reputable universities, there is poor academic tuition support at University of Auckland so by the time of examination, you wouldn't be prepared as to what is to be tested and just have to accept your arbitrary marks and grades. Remember, you are only a cash cow, contributing to university maintenance, research fund and the vice-chancellor's residence. Quality of teaching and your wellbeing is never and will not be a priority.
Terrible university service for international students. I have applied for offer letter in January and it's almost more than 2 months still didn't get any reply from them.
Deeply concerned and disgusted by such racist act of Māori segregation implemented by UOA. Māori and Pacifica are no different than any other races and they do not need a separate designated private room apart from other students with different races. Unless the university believes that they are unable to interact with other races, which is wrong and totally offensive! UOA must stop this racist activity immediately. He iwi tahi tatou. We are one people.
EDIT: Actually, this seeing how bad this university treats it students and staff, and prioritizes giving out free stuff during Open Day and building new useless buildings, it pretty much sums up UoA as a whole. Can't blame Hubs though I guess that's just how the university treats them
Old and scenic, Harry Potter like.
I would not recommend going to this university. NZ school leavers better off go to Australian Universities instead. The most serious problem in this university is the Student Hubs as well as most teaching staff. There are many instances of lecturers strike. In addition, when you ask a question to the Student Hub, they seem like cannot be bothered to answer your question. When you send an email, they will reply you, however with very useless replies e.g. they will find an irrelevant paragraph from UOA website as their reply saying "you should read this yourself". As students, we would have thoroughly reviewed all the material available on UOA before go on and ask Student Hub. In addition, I found it hard to understand that most teaching staff are using the same lecture materials and modules every semester but still complaining they are too busy hence a strike action will take place. All in all, there are too many problems. Many aspects of this university needs further improvement.
The university owe me $700. Not only they rob you $60 nonsense administration fee to get your money back, but also they really don't care if you get your money or what by making tons of trouble as much as possible. This is absolutely terrible! I have never seen any university in the US or China charging you a fee for getting back what you deserve. Also, they said the money must go back to the original payment account, which was a year ago in China and they want YOU to prove it, even though I have a legit NZ bank account. What a careless institution for students and their life!!!
Top university in Auckland. Has 95% of its subjects has top ranking in New Zealand. The fees is high but the facilities and staff is amazing. Great environment for studies and they do ensure that students get best education and they are safe from bullies or racism. Fantastic place to study in Auckland.
