Some lovely food in a cozy atmosphere.nnA little disappointed that they were out of mulled wine, but I know the ski season was winding down. My husband loved his burger. My glass of wine was tasty. Nice that they had gluten free options. Good cider selection.nnThe servers were also being trained, which is to be expected in this transition season. They were very nice, but did not know the menu terribly well. But again, to be expected. I think my issue here was that if the servers had known the menu a little bit better, I would’ve had a better experience in terms of ordering, because I ordered the pumpkin soup, which was delicious, and then I ordered the pumpkin pasta, which tasted quite like the pumpkin soup. And if the server had known they were using a very similar sauce for the pasta, I wouldn’t have two things that tasted the same. They were both good, but it was a lot of pumpkin! I knew I was getting pumpkin pasta and pumpkin soup, but I didn’t think it would be almost the exact same sauce. But, of course, the kitchen is using economy of a scale, and would serve it with the same or similar sauce. It just would’ve been nice if the server told me that. Regardless, everything was very good. I’m so glad they have a restaurant like this at the inn, because it’s so convenient to just bop downstairs and have a lovely meal.
The food is expensive and not very good. The chicken schnitzel was very dry and the crumb was not well balanced in flavour - it tasted like powdered garlic. I asked for a rare steak and it came out blue - it was $45 and wasn’t even a very nice cut - full of un-rendered fat and gristle. I could have asked for it to be cooked more but I didn’t feel very comfortable to do so. The service was slow, lax and a little confused they didn’t seem to know the menu well or understand basic dietary requirements. The salad was small and dry - the kind you pour out of a bag. The fries weren’t crispy and the sauce with the schnitzel was coagulated. The decor was cheap, scruffy and outdated. Waiting room chairs and carpet. I felt really sorry or the two very large fish in a very small fish tank. The fish tank was overcrowded. The decor, food and service would have all been forgivable were the prices not so high.
What an unexpected gem in Whakapapa Village! We were a bit hesitant to dine here after reading some reviews, but we couldn't have been more pleasantly surprised. The food was absolutely outstanding! From the succulent lamb shank to the Eton mess, every bite was a delight. Just a tip—boost your visibility on Instagram and Google Maps by showcasing more photos of your amazing dishes.
So I ate at this restaurant the night I finished hiking the Tongariro Northern Circuit, so I was quite starved for a good meal. I started at the bar with just a bottled cider, the atmosphere was good, not too many people and nice comfy couches to relax my sore body on. For dinner I was SUPER hungry so I got an order of garlic bread, it was not very strong on the garlic if you care about that. For mains I had the fish and chips with an asahi beer. The fish and chips were very good but the breading was a little thick on the ends for fish and chips. The menu did not specify but the fish used as cod not surprising given the location and it was still very delicious. I finished off my dinner with some sticky toffee pudding with a scoop of ice cream. The dinner was not cheap but was undeniably delicious. I would absolutely come back here!
Came for a few beers after the alpine crossing, shared a marg pizza, some loaded fries and onion rings. Service was so quick with the food, and Conor on the bar is a ray of sunshine! Great customer service, we really enjoyed it here - would recommend.
