Stopped by on a rainy weekend afternoon for a quick lunch. Staff not particularly friendly but helpful and quick service so no problem. Small little pub feel with high tables and billiards and some background music. Local made beers. $20NZD for banners and mash with a draft beer is a great deal in Auckland. Bet was nice and good was well presented and tasty. We enjoyed our visit and would do but again if we are on the area.
If you like a charming, historical, old fashion little boutique hotel with a glorious past and a very good pub and restaurant, this is the right place! Not to mention the amazing and super convenient location! The rooms, however, are very small and definitely old fashioned: but this is part of the charm. Not recommended to people who have issues climbing the stairs there is no lift.
Neat atmosphere can definitely tell she's a piece of history lol. Service was alright. Staff may have had enough for the day. We bought a 3 course meal from grab one it was soooo so good!! Food looked great and was very delicious! Food & drinks: Food was the best. The pork ribs were amazing, and the steak cooked perfectly. My husband is a potato guy he wasn't too keen on those
We had dinner in the restaurant. Very strange experience, as when we were seated by the bar tender, she said she'd be right over to take care of us. Never happened. Another young lady came to take our drink orders and only remembered 3 out of the 4 we ordered. Apologized and brought it. We then ordered our meals which took a while. Two showed up, and we ended up telling those folks to eat so their food wouldn't be cold. One Soda never showed up, and we never saw our server again. I had to go to the bar tender to ask for our invoice. BUT... We all thought that the Food Was Excellent! Maybe, we just weren't familiar with how a pub works... being from across the world.
Not sure how you run a pub but close the kitchen before closing time. I think Kiwis have lost the concept of how business works. Provide and people will keep coming stop and I don’t come again. Kitchen closed 815pm. Anywhere in the world that is when people start eating. Drink and food. Simple pub recipe.
Nice 'big bro' burger, and tasty fries. Staff were friendly and it was nice to be able to sit outside and eat : I would give the burger 5 stars if the patties were combined and smashed out to be the same diameter as the bun.
Went only to the bar. The atmosphere was nice, staff friendly and prices OK. Table pool appreciated too, we had a nice time playing and drinking beers there. Kitchens close early, be careful if you're hungry when you go there ;
We had pnlya beer in the pub. But the home made beer Was great and the stuff was very friendly. The house looks great with a lot of history. I can recommend this place fora beer and I think the food must be fine as well.Rooms: 5/5
Commenting solely on the pub part of the business which is the most relevant. It's a lovely place to hang out. The craft beer brewed onsite is excellent and great value. The food is not amazing but decent. Service good.
During the lead up to “Gabrielle” I took my three dear friends visiting from Australia to the Shakespeare pub. On arrival very damp and blustered I ordered a bottle of wine and a large fries. The wine arrived but not the fries. I ordered our mains : 3x lamb shanks and a pizza because I wasn’t allowed the kid’s cheeseburger. The fries never arrived so we followed up and were then told that there were only 2 lamb shanks available . We ordered another bottle of wine and waited and waited for our meals. Eventually they arrived. The lamb shanks were very disappointing. The steak was ok. I’ll know about the pizza later because I was beyond eating. When I gave feedback upon paying the $240 bill I was given insincere platitudes and that the feedback would be passed on to the manager who is on annual leave. I said “we won’t be back” and the male staff member said “ we don’t want you back”.
