Bought a bottle of vino at the Waiheke Wine Center store and asked the wine clerk where was a good place to get fish and chips. She mentioned next door at The Local. Boy was this an unexpected surprise. For $22.73USD, I had probbly the best Fish and Chips ever, and that includes places I ate in other parts of the world sorry UK, CAN, and AUS. It came with a large strip of crunchy battered snapper, chips, and cole slaw. The batter was tasty and not overly greasy. The fish was firm yet soft, and not chewy. Even the skinny ends survived the frying process. The homemade Tartar sauce was very tasty and wish they gave more for dipping with the chips too. Speaking of chips aka french fried potato wedges, it was super crunchy on the outside and not overly potato-ey on the inside, just perfectly salted and fried. I read other reviews raving about the chips and yes they are that good. Cole slaw was okay with a mixture of finely cut cabbage and carrots and not overly saucy, almost lacking dressing. If you are here in the day, get an outdoor covered table facing the bay. You won’t be disappointed with the picturesque scenery.
We had two unbelievable meals at the Local, probably among the first days they were open for the season! The service was friendly with good banter and the food was sensational, especially with the view overlooking the ocean providing some extra mental seasoning. I enjoyed the cheeseburger with bacon and a pop one day, and fish and chips the other. The fries/chips were standout, being among the best I have ever had. I would come back for a casual meal anytime.
A beautiful day on the island topped off. By delicious beer and the most extraordinary view you could ever get. The fish and chips were perfect as well as the chipsnGreat service
I went here for lunch today and it was honestly one of the best fish and chips I’ve ever had. I got the beer-battered snapper, which had a perfectly light and crispy batter, and the snapper itself was tender and full of flavour. The chips were the real standout — soft like mashed potatoes on the inside, crispy on the outside, with little crunchy crevices that made them irresistible. The salt and pepper squid was also fantastic. The lovely couple who run this place, along with their big friendly dog Andy, were warm and welcoming. Highly recommend!
Some of the best fish and chips I’ve ever had. Simon is a great host and the decor is amazing and the view is incredible.
