Through technique and vision, Richard Landers, of the Glass Gallery, brings a new aspect to creating visual beauty through the chosen medium of glass.
Involved in the glass and glazing industry since 1981, Richard Landers, through his technique and vision, brings a new aspect to creating visual beauty through his chosen medium of glass. Recognising the situation, noting the lifestyle and tastes of each patron, as well as the architectural space; are the most important link in forming a relationship necessary for a successful outcome for all. Each commission brings its own challenge- one that drive Richard's passion for design.
His creativity and ability to express on paper what can be accomplished in his studio has made him a favourite among his many clients. The stained glass window is an integral part of the building, as a window and as a aesthetic element, designed to bring colour, visual interest and vitality to the structural environment.
From conceptual drawings to finished piece, each step of the process is done by hand with meticulous attention to quality and detail. The windows offer privacy and artistry, while retaining light, the most important feature of stained glass.
Working with a subtle combination of fine coloured, and textured clear glass the extensive studio produces windows and objects in various styles combining machine and hand-made glasses, bevels, jewels, engraving, foiling, fused or laminated pieces.
The studio was established in 1987 in Hawera, and included a mini-studio at Tawhiti Museum for 14 years, where Richard displayed his work and demonstrated technique to a wide range of visitors in a very creative atmosphere.
Relocation to New Plymouth in 2003 presented the opportunity for a purpose-built studio with more space, near the coast with panoramic views of Mt. Egmont; incorporating a public gallery with works for sale, visitors are also invited to view the studio area to learn a little more of the fascinations of glass and view work in progress.
Working from his home base allows the studio to be open seven days, but because of Richard's busy work schedule means the studio is sometimes unattended, so it is a good idea to call to confirm hours.
Richard has a vast experience to offer and his history has many commissions including Churches, public spaces, galleries, Maraes, corporate facilities and private residences all over New Zealand and many overseas.
Complimenting his window panels, Richard also does a range of glass sculpture, 3 dimensional laminated works, kiln formed glass and has designed many corporate gifts and awards.
Richard is a founding member of the Art Glass Association of NZ.
