Govett-Brewster Art Gallery/Len Lye Centre

About

The Govett-Brewster Art Gallery is Aotearoa New Zealand’s contemporary art museum, home to the ideas and art of Len Lye. Open seven days.

Story

The Govett Brewster Art Gallery is New Zealand’s museum of contemporary art.

The latest addition to the Govett-Brewster – the Len Lye Centre – is New Zealand’s first institution dedicated to a single artist, the pioneering filmmaker and kinetic sculptor, Len Lye.

With its curved exterior walls of mirror-like stainless steel, the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery/Len Lye Centre is the country’s first example of destination architecture linked to contemporary art and is one of the country’s most iconic buildings.

Experience innovative and provocative work by New Zealand and international artists, an ever-changing exhibition programme, talks about the art, tours and art making.

The 62-seat Len Lye Centre Cinema is a welcoming environment for audiences to experience Len Lye’s films, experimental, arthouse and cult films, and regular film festival programming. Tickets are available online or at the Govett-Brewster Shop.

For something a little different, the Govett-Brewster Shop is not your usual tat. Contemporary design and objects of inspiration, jewellery, Len Lye and Govett-Brewster merchandise, books, gift cards, cool kids' stuff and limited edition collaborations mean you’ll definitely need to add extra time to your visit.

Monica’s Eatery, next door to the Govett-Brewster, is an international art cafe inspired by the life and spirit of Monica Brewster, a globetrotter even before the golden age of air travel and founding patron of the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery. Open seven days for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

"Please note: access to our exhibitions will close at 2:30PM during WEEKDAYS in AUGUST due to staff shortages. All events, cinema screenings and our shop will remain open as normal."

Such an amazing space to be in and to visit. We were there for the newly minted Pacific Art exhibition but also got the opportunity to see the existing exhibitions as well. Only made New Plymouth even more of a find and a great city to visit.
Some of Len Lyn's Art, photography and his circle were evident in the Gallery. Also there were 2 other artists being displayed. They were a Pakistani and another from Mumbai; both artist now live and work in New Zealand. All art displayed had a story attached to them if you love to read. All stories were quite interesting.
All glitz no substance. The building is cool to photograph but $15 entry is not worth it. You can see amazing works of art for free around the country so this isn't something I would recommend.
Great gallery, and you will get a closer look of the building structure once inside as well, just as amazing as the contents on display. Unfortunately I went when there was a changeover so only got to see the Len Lye part. Good way to spend 30mins or so, and watch some of the moving work.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
Fabulous place to visit. Free to go through the gallery for locals a cost for others . Under 16s free . think that's the age . If u have to pay do so don't walk away for if u do so you miss a great treat
Great experience that was better than expected. Would say 10 points for the well judged curation. We left feeling inspired as opposed to over whelmed or confused. Recommended.
Good themed exhibits although some are too abstract to comprehend. The entry fee is very reasonable.
Jan2021:The contrast of the outside to the inside is huge. From the "look at me" statement, to the cool peaceful spaces... Bit surprised at the price for an adult $15.00. BUT, I enjoyed what I saw. Easy access. Left or right will lead the the middle chamber. The history behind the works are interesting. To see them beautiful. The exhibition on Taranaki history worthwhile slowing down, reading the briefs and looking again at the art. Thank you.
Beautiful building for sunrise ray reflection.
An off chance encounter to visit the gallery resulted in attending a talk by 3 Pasifika guest speakers, admiring their art exhibition afterwards as well as the Len Lye gallery. An awesome time was had.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNot sure
