I think it's fair to say that the transition to the new owners was a little wobbly and exacerbated by the nationwide shortage of GPs but my experience in the past year has been great. I understand the system now and am comfortable with the phone consults for routine health matters and get appointments in person with any complex or pressing matters. I feel well looked after from a health perspective.
Unfriendly and unkind. We went in to ask for a simple blood pressure test for my father. They didn’t even ask if he was unwell before telling us we needed an appointment. The room was completely empty and the nurses chatting. The pharmacy across the road was 10 times as busy and still helped us. For a doctor’s practice in an area with many elderly people, you would think they would be kinder.
They use the nurses to triage over the phone to see if youre elligible for an appointment within 8 -10weeks, but they have no idea what they're doing. Apparently severe anaemia requiring an infusion is not urgent. Also, a ligament torn completely off the bone and requiring acute surgery within 3 weeks of injury is apparently not urgent. I have suffering this injury for life as a result of their incompetence. Outrageously bad service.
It is with great reluctance that I write this but I feel very strongly about the care or lack thereof by medical professionals. Last Thursday I visited a local gym to work out and unfortunately a bar was left attached incorrectly on a machine and it dropped on my head. Luckily my husband was passing as I was in shock and bleeding profusely. We went across the road to the local medical centre and I asked if they were able to assist with bleeding. I was asked if I had an appointment and of course I didn’t. They asked if I was registered with them and of course I wasn’t as I was on holiday visiting relatives. They then proceeded to tell me that they wouldn’t see me as I wasn’t a patient and there were no appointments and that Emergency Department at hospital would take care it it. I knew from visiting relatives that if I did this, the wait would be long and the staff are under the pump anyway. What would have been ideal at the very least was to offer a means to compress the wound but no … this was not offered and we were left frustrated and disappointed with the lack of empathy at the very least. So very sad that it has all come to this in this day and age. The commercial dollar is more important than helping people. I honestly believe someone walking past would have had more compassion than the actual staff that were there on the day. Unbelievable.
We are visitors from the UK. Arrived here today having picked up respiratory and ear infections on South Island. Response from person who answered the phone was 'dismissive / bored' and actually said 'we don't have capacity for casual patients'. Welcome to New Zealand.
