Tenancy Services is a part of the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE), a New Zealand government department.
Tenancy Services:
• provides guidance on tenancy-related matters under the Residential Tenancies Act (the Act)
• holds tenancy bonds in trust until the end of a tenancy
• provides mediation services for tenants and landlords
• works with the Ministry of Justice to schedule Tenancy Tribunal hearings
• monitors and enforces compliance with the Act.
The www.tenancy.govt.nz website provides information on your responsibilities and rights as a landlord or tenant. It covers what you need to know at every stage of the tenancy process, including starting a tenancy, maintenance and inspections, and ending a tenancy.
Tenancy.govt.nz provides clear information, forms and templates for you to use. You can also find guidance on dealing with common tenancy issues.
If you're a landlord or tenant and have a dispute that you can't sort out together, Tenancy Services can arrange mediation to help resolve your issue. If you cannot resolve it at mediation, they will refer you to the Tenancy Tribunal, which is managed by the Ministry of Justice.
