Creating culture, preserving heritage

Story

Manatū Taonga, the Ministry for Culture and Heritage works to enrich the lives of all New Zealanders by supporting our dynamic culture and preserving our heritage.

We support many of New Zealand’s arts, media, heritage and sports organisations; advise government on cultural matters and provide research and resources for everyone to access. The organisations we fund deliver a wide range of cultural experiences for all to enjoy.

The PTB is a very distinctive, heritage building of the Edwardian period to be found in Lambton Quay. It was first used by the Public Trust Office from 1909 to 1982. The PTO when established in 1872 was one of the first of its kind n the world. The continued use of the name shows this important historical link even though the PTO moved out a long time ago. The PTB is the only building left that was made from "true NZ granite", quarried from north-west Nelson, and is also believed to be the 1st steel-framed office building in NZ. John Campbell was the chief architect who designed what has been termed "the most architecturally elaborate facade in the capital...and nation" and "our nation's crowning glory"" by the Wellington Architecture Centre. After earthquake strengthening was completed in 2015 the PBT has been mostly occupied by the Ministry for Culture and Heritage except for the large downstairs hall. In Oct 2019 this PT Hall was designated as an events venue and can cater for 300 guests.
Stunning with super helpful lovely staff.
