I stayed at this hostel as a place from which to do the great walks and hikes in Fiordland and I cannot speak highly enough of my experience there. After 6 weeks in NZ South Island this was by far the best hostel that I stayed at. It is extremely well taken care of, clean, and had all of the services I desired in a hostel. I stayed in the 4 bed shared dorms rooms which have an ensuite bathroom with shower connected to the room and the tarp tent very cozy atmosphere amidst the rain. Staff here were very accommodating within reason letting me air out my tent in their green space to dry when it was wet. There was plenty of parking, plenty of kitchen space and indoor and outdoor stoves and seating. Lovely hostel. Great place to connect with other backpackers and trampers. Highly recommend.
The private little cabins are new and nice. The shared bathrooms are well designed and hot showers. Quality and value for the price. The beds need some brakes on the wheels, these are not gonna stay in the same place with a little bit of activities.nnFYI to backpackers... collecting things from other places stealing and leaving them behind at other motels thinking other people want them litering is not helping anyone but yourself.
Shocking and Discriminatory Treatment – A Call for Professionalism and RespectnnI rarely write reviews, but our recent experience at this motel left me no choice. On December 30, 2024, we arrived at this establishment with our 2-year-old child, and our experience was nothing short of shocking.nnI want to apologize for the length of this review, especially if it’s read by anyone other than the lady who asked us to leave. If the lady with the studs is not the owner, we apologize in advance; our intention is not to harm the business, but we feel compelled to share our experience.nnWe had failed to mention our toddler when booking the room, though it’s worth noting that the motel’s website did not specify any policy requiring the disclosure of children. Upon arrival, a staff member who had studs on her face, though I didn’t catch her name told us we needed to leave because of our toddler. While we were more than willing to pay an additional fee for our child, her response quickly turned hostile and, frankly, racist.nnAt first, she agreed to charge us an extra fee for the child, but then she refused to let us stay altogether, insisting our toddler couldn’t remain at the motel. This was baffling to us. We had no idea why a toddler would be refused, especially given it was peak holiday season, and finding alternative accommodation at short notice was incredibly difficult.nnAfter much effort, my wife managed to find a motel 20km away. We vacated the motel immediately, returning the key as requested. The staff member even asked us to prove we had booked another motel since she was worried we may come back in at night unbelievable right?, which felt utterly unnecessary and humiliating. Also, remember we lost our money - she was happy taking the key back with her could see her smile! She might have made money by giving the room to another family which we didn’t care.nnIt’s disheartening to experience such unprofessionalism and, frankly, discrimination. New Zealand is a country I’ve always respected, but this treatment was completely unacceptable. We came to your motel as guests, but you treated us as if we didn’t matter. My advice to the staff member involved: please remember to treat others with dignity and respect. Being human first should always come before anything else.nnAlso, can’t forget my wife’s face who cried for next 2 hours because of this horrible treatment.
Liked it!nNice welcome from the staff, the dorms have shower and toilets inside quite convinient!, the kitchen is very well equiped, shared spaces are clean and comfy.nBeautiful location in front of the lake.nFree parking.nFair prices.
Really nice backpackers in central te anau with views of the lake.nI liked it here, it was friendly and clean, nice kitchen and lounge areas heaps of places to sit and relax or eat.nThe 4 bed dorms were ok but not much room round the beds, the door squeaked something horrible and the handle in the bathroom was broken but otherwise it was a nice place to stay.n$50 for a bed in a dorm but then it's the only backpackers in town.
