Story

Tāne Mahuta is a giant kauri tree (Agathis australis) in the Waipoua Forest of Northland Region, New Zealand. Its age is unknown but is estimated to be between 1,250 and 2,500 years. It is the largest kauri known to stand today. Its Māori name means "Lord of the Forest" (see Tāne), from the name of a god in the Māori pantheon. The tree is a remnant of the ancient subtropical rainforest that once grew on the North Auckland Peninsula. Other giant kauri are found nearby, notably Te Matua Ngahere. Tāne Mahuta is the most famous tree in New Zealand, along with Te Matua Ngahere. It is thought it was discovered and identified in the 1920s when contractors surveyed the present State Highway 12 route through the forest. In 1928 Nicholas Yakas and other bushmen, who were building the road, also identified the tree.According to the Maori creation myth, Tāne is the son of Ranginui the sky father and Papatuanuku the earth mother. Tāne separates his parents from their marital embrace until his father the sky is high above mother earth. Tāne then sets about clothing his mother with vegetation. The birds and the trees of the forest are regarded as Tāne’s children.

Amazing to be able to get so up close with this legend of the forest. Foot wash station working well. Pathway is super accessible. The drive through the forest was stunning. Absolutely recommended.
Amazing place. Really peaceful and the tree is gorgeous. you can feel the power of the mother nature. Is highly recommend this spectacular natural give.
Seeing Tane Mahuta was just a beautiful experience, he is truly a giant & Lord of the forest .... the only downside was the young fella assume a DOC employee tasked with closing the gates at 5.00pm actually closed them approx 4.20pm consequently people turning up after 4.20 never got the chance to see Tane Mahuta ....
Beautiful tree, amazing to just sit and stare at it’s size. It’s a very short walk along a boardwalk which protects the roots of the tree. Earlier in the day you’ll find it less busy. The road to Tane Mahuta is also beautiful, through the forest.
Massive tree as expected. Photos don't do it justice as to how big it is, especially since it's been protected by a fence understandably. Picnic spot opposite where you can see the top of it was a nice surprise, with toilets nearby.
So peaceful! So divine! Am so glad we visited this sacred place
Well worth the long walk on the timber decking. Amazing and much bigger than expected...photos can not show just how big. Lots of timber and firewood. Please take care to protect Kauri.
