Star and Garter Restaurant

Best steak place in the whole of New Zealand hands down. Been touring different cities in South Island for 3 weeks and I have yet to come across another as delicious as Star and Garter. It was so good that I had this for dinner every single night I was in Oamaru!

Beautiful spot!! Friendly staff and amazing fish & chips. We are from England and it’s the best fish and chips we have had in years!! Would come back again and 100% recommend! So nice to read the stories of all the wedding receptions that happened here in the 40/50s!

Couldn’t recommend any higher. Lovely service. Really authentic building that’s been used for years and years. The best fish and chips I’ve had in years. Will be back when we return to Oamaru for sure!

Didn't actually planned to eat here but I was glad we did. Popped in for lunch and we ordered the roast of the day pork and a ribeye. Both dishes were excellent and the roasted potatoes were crisp on the outside while soft on the inside.nnIt was little wonder why the place was full of patrons when we left at about 1pm. Excellent food and service with free on-street parking just outside the restaurant.

Do not pass through Oamaru without stopping in Star and Garter for the best meal in town - and perhaps the best meal you've eaten in New Zealand. The menu has straight forward classic NZ fare that is made from scratch and served by the most delightful folks. My husband ordered the sensible pan-fried blue cod which was delicious. I ordered the lamb shank which was slow cooked to absolute perfection in red wine which later was perfected into gravy. The mashed potatoes were fresh and outstanding in their texture and the vegetables were tender crisp.nps: do not miss out on a side of their home made cole-slaw.
