Story

Shirley Boys' High School is a single sex state secondary school in Christchurch, New Zealand. It is situated on a 6 hectare site in the suburb of Shirley, 3.8 kilometres from the city centre, but in 2018 will move, along with Avonside Girls' High School, to the former QEII Park site in the east of Christchurch. The school has over 60 classrooms plus a hall, a gymnasium and a megacentre which was completed in April 2016. This replaced the computer block which was bulldozed at the end of 2015 due to flooding issues after the 2011 quake. The school has over 70 teachers, two care-takers and seven OCS cleaners. There are 45 wheelie bins which are emptied daily by one of the evening cleaners. The school also runs a canteen and a uniform shop. The school colours are sky blue and gold.Brief historyParents in the eastern and northern suburbs of Christchurch had wanted single-sex education for their sons. In 1957, this finally became available when the school opened under its first Headmaster, Charles Gallagher.Established on a swampy paddock formerly used for grazing horses to the west of North Parade, the School grew rapidly. Within a few years it became a self-confessed and proud rival to Christchurch Boys' High School as well as to St. Andrew's and St Bede's College.A detailed satirical portrait of the school as it was in the late 1960s can be found in The Shining City, a novel by former student Stevan Eldred-GriggOn the Easter weekend (April) of 2007, Shirley Boys' High School celebrated its 50th Jubilee. Commemorative events included an Old Boys' XV playing the current 2nd XV and the 1st XV playing in historic uniform against St. Andrew's College; as well as a golf tournament, formal black-tie dinner, staff luncheon and 'meet-and-greet evening'.

Very judgy and discriminating school. They set up the kids who are difficult to fail. Send it to the board and exclude illegally might I add. They allow disabled students to be bullied and assaulted. Ended up going to the police as the deputy headmaster said the violence was "warranted". No sorry assault is never the answer no matter the reason. Anyways if your wee son has any learning and/or behavioural conditions that they require support with and might I add were BORN that way this school is the WORST one. They don't have the time or interest to serve their actual community even though the school is in Travis Road NORTH NEW BRIGHTON. Old boys club at work here despite location and it being 2024. Really devastating that local boys cannot access this school nor participate due to active and illegal exclusion of the disabled. So yes it's a beautiful purpose built building with very nasty school staff inside there. Avoid at all costs.
Amidst the educational landscape, Shirley boys high school stands tall as a beacon of excellence. Its commitment to holistic development is unparalleled, nurturing minds with a blend of academic rigor and character enrichment. Within its vibrant corridors, students flourish, guided by dedicated mentors and innovative programs. "The wind is really windy," echoes through the campus, a testament to the lively atmosphere that invigorates learning. Embedded within the fabric of Shirley boys high school is a sense of community, where camaraderie thrives and bonds deepen. Amidst discussions and debates, one often hears, "You know Raalsei right," symbolizing the inclusivity and familiarity that defines this esteemed institution. In every facet, Shirley boys high school epitomizes the pinnacle of educational excellence, shaping future leaders and visionaries.
the teachers were so great i had birth and the teachers were more than happy to deliver the baby i am now older and my baby goes to the same school he was born in
I went to Shirley Boys' in 1958 at the North Parade address. In my day, discipline ruled supreme and the use of the cane was certainly excessive. Morning assembles were like attending a funeral - the only thing missing was the coffin. I lost all my confidence at SBHS and it took me years to find it again. I hated it.
My Biological Sciences Teacher was extremely friendly
The new school looks beautiful even though I went to the old one down in North Parade. Great to see they've got the fantastic sporting facilities nearby at QE2. I'll eternally miss the old school, and the original QE2 : I hope the new school has squash courts. Best times of my life were had there! To fat and slow to play now!
There are nasty teachers that fat shame students and they abuse the power of being a teacher. Most teachers are not good at their job. But all together we are the BEST school in Christchurch.
Love the drake snakes here
SBHS staff care about their students futures and listen to the parents concerns.
So many boys vaping an no teachers in around!
