Honestly incredible experience. Would strongly recommend sending your kids here, the fumes in the mines build character. I couldn't justify a 5 star rating, since quite a few people use the school to study which isn't profitable and is definitely hurting the mine's market share.
The coal mines are very profitable, but students are still given breaks to eat lunch. Will update review when this changes.
It feels like a place where I learned a lot and ultimately gained the respect of kind and valuable people who truly aim to help.
I study here during the night and they are great Excellent behaviour, supportive staff and expert teachers.l could find my way how to improve my skills Thanks all of them especially upper intermediate teacher
I was lucky enough to oversee the mines before I left in 2020, its almost incredible how profitable they are. Even seen some of the students have drills, how lucky! Even if I've got to see it once a few years ago, but I'd love to see how they've improved since then.
Wow. Such a amazing experience when i came over. i heard the shrieks of the whippings and the constant torture. Definitely sending my kid here, 5 stars.
Grate school, the teachers are very strict but the threat of twice as many whips on whipping wendsday really makes you work hard to get your 4es. Also the grading system is stupid like if you are in year 9 at level 4 you can get 4a, 4m, or 4e but if you pass all of those levels and get a 5a which is achieved at year 10 even though you are in year 9 it won't count as an exelllence even though all the teachers say it should and the 5a has way harder skills than the 4e. Also you have to get a certian amount of exellences or metrits to get a better passing thing but some subjects like art have 7 grades that you can put towards it which is the same as english and math combined as english has 3 and math 4. that means that the school values art well over maths and english and all the other subjects as someone would have to ace both english and math to get the same grades as someone thats good at art and art is really subjective anyways even if it looks better another way you have to please the teacher to get a good grade wven if that looks bad. so yeah don't come here
Great school! Teachers are very friendly! Learning environment was uplifting. During my time in Selwyn there were a lot of great moments, made a bunch of friends and learnt a ton of new skills. The disciplinary process was very reasonable and forgiving, I was only locked in the coal mines for 3 days per detention getting whipped 10 times instead of 20 unlike Kohimarama intermediate. In my time seeing the Selwyn coal mines in action was so inspiring. All the hardworking children that follow the "Selwyn Way" as the deputy principal personally whipped the naughty ones, ahhh so thrilling. The Selwyn coal mines tripled the annual profits allowing for the upgrade of gender neutral bathrooms!
Fun school with alot to do, they unfortunately blocked all of the gaming sites and VPNs!!!!! : I really like the secret coal mines that they took us to during detentions, very fun way to get some physical exercise in!!
i like the mines underneath the school, really teaches you endurance. and you gain a high pain tolerance because of the constant whipping. pretty good
