This was hands down the worst hostile I have stayed in while traveling for the past 3 months in New Zealand. It's one of those grimy, disgusting, bed bug haven hostels that rarely gets clean with a manager that is as friendly and kind as a bush possum. I guess that's what you get when you go with the cheapest option. Still wish I went to the blue moon instead. Most of the people staying there were essentially living there full time coming and going all night long which is not such a big deal aside from the fact that the walls are basically made of cardboard and you can hear everything anyone does. Just one night there made me so depressed. I felt like quiting my adventures and going straight home. Bathrooms were disgusting I used the public ones down the street which were in nicer condition. Wow. I made a huge mistake staying here, wish I looked at some of the other reviews. I would recommend blue moon or anywhere else and if you stay here I wish you the best of luck.
Honestly, I don’t understand the previous review. We enjoyed our stay. The lady at the reception was lovely, everything was clean and there were heaps of other backpackers also some workers, but they were nice as well. Nice location as well. I would definitely come back.Service: 5/5
New management is fantastic and friendly, the place is kept clean and overall is great value for money. The place needs a bit of maintenance work from the owners. But for the value for money I would 100% recommend this place.Rooms: 5/5
Ok to rest your head for a night, but if you're just stopping over it's probably worth making the extra drive to a hostel in Picton or Nelson. It felt more like a long term home for workers rather than a backpackers. There didn't seem to be any point in booking online as the staff didn't have access to the online booking system so a space isn't guaranteed, although it was quite quiet when we arrived. Room and amenities were fine although there was no lights in our room so had to use a torch from 6:30pm.
Probably the worst hostel I ever stayed in! No one around to check in, calling the number given for after hours enquiries only resulted in voicemail; very dirty; beds not made up; old, worn and very uncomfortable mattresses; messy kitchen with only three mugs and glasses available. The only good thing was that a long-term guest was so nice to sort me out, show me around and change the linen with fresh ones. She even borrowed me her heater as the one in the room didn't work. Cheap place, but I can't really recommend staying there, was glad when I left.
Not really a backpacker hostel, more of a long-term rental place for many people working locally. Which means no room in cubbies or fridge for food, and people coming and going all night. I paid handsomely for a windowless room right beside the open-all-night common room, and was awakened many times during the night. Moderately clean.
clean, big and spacious area, very homely decorated.. just feel like home.. very spacious n fully equip kitchen.. easily can accommodate many people cooking at once.. dining n living area no doubt u can have a dozen people dining or just laid around.. i stayed there for 3 months... i just loves the quiet area...
I stayed here for a couple of weeks. It's nice, quiet and clean. I like the living room. Kitchen is small but basically got everything. The manager is kind and easy-going. The price is reasonable also.
A small very nice place with real people in it who remember your name. Long-term peeps here too. Smokers are a bit much sometimes, as natural ventilation blow smoke in and down hallways. A converted schoolhouse where Ernest Rutherford went to school here in the early 19th C
This is by far the best hostel in town. I visited during the weekend and all of the long term backpackers eat and drink together. We had an awesome night! Wish i could stay Special thanks to Dan!
