The Fire Brigade was established in Palmerston North in 1883. The Cook Street station was opened in 1977, at a cost of $1.8 million, and at the time was said to be the most up to date in New Zealand and Australia. The 25 metre tower is used to dry hoses and as a smoke chamber for training.
