Beautiful old town with cute little shops and cafes. Well worth a stop on a drive from Dunedin to Christchurch or Mt Cook and vice versa.
I love how the city has repurposed the old buildings as local shops and spaces for you to explore. So many little boutique stores, and kiosks blended with quaint restaurants, all scattered throughout the corridors. It’s fun to see the vintage mixed with the steampunk vibes. Totally worth a visit!
Oamaru is my new home now and this is definitely a must visit place! Rich in Victorian history, you wouldn't want to miss staying here for a day or 2 before heading to your adventure to Dunedin or Christchurch!
Oamaru Heritage Precinct is a beautifully preserved historic area showcasing Oamaru’s Victorian-era past. Built mainly from local limestone in the late 1800s, it was once a busy commercial hub linked to the harbour and port trade. Today, it stands as one of the finest examples of colonial architecture in New Zealand.nnThe precinct itself is free and open 24/7, making it easy to visit at any time. Most galleries, shops, and cafés operate roughly between 10:00 AM and 4–5:00 PM.nnThere’s plenty to see while roaming around—historic stone buildings, small art galleries, craft shops, nearby harbour views, and attractions like Steampunk HQ ticketed. The area is best explored on foot, at a slow pace, with no fixed route. Just wander, explore side lanes, and enjoy the calm atmosphere.
We stopped here on our drive from Dunedin to Christchurch and are so glad we did. It was the perfect place to spend the morning. The town is absolutely beautiful and has so much charm you really feel like you've stepped back in time. There are countless photo opportunities, wonderful local shops to explore, and everyone we met was so friendly and welcoming. A must visit if you're travelling through the area!
