Visiting Te Papa was absolutely the highlight of our time in Wellington. I honestly cannot recommend it enough!nThe Gallipoli: The Scale of Our War exhibition left us completely speechless. The giant sculptures created by Weta Workshop are hauntingly realistic, bringing the history to life in a way that is both heartbreaking and beautiful. It was an emotional experience we won't forget.nBeyond the history, the nature and art exhibitions were fantastic. My whole family loved exploring the natural history sections—seeing the unique native wildlife gave us such a vivid picture of the country. We also gained a profound appreciation for Aotearoa’s history through the stunning Māori artifacts on display.nIt wasn't just educational; it was genuinely fun. We walked away feeling like we truly understand this beautiful country better. Do not miss this!
We absolutely loved visiting Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa — it was honestly one of the absolute highlights of our time in Wellington. From the moment we walked in, we were impressed by how welcoming, modern, and thoughtfully designed the museum is. There is so much to see and experience. Every floor offers something completely different, from history and culture to art and natural science. We originally thought we would spend an hour or two there, but we ended up staying much longer because every exhibit drew us in.nnAlong with the exhibits on immigration, native birds in New Zealand, earthquakes, animal and plant life in the ocean, the Māori and Pacific exhibits were especially memorable. We really appreciated how beautifully and respectfully the stories, traditions, and history of Aotearoa are shared. These spaces felt powerful, moving, and deeply memorable.nnThe Gallipoli exhibition- The Scale of our War was another standout for us — truly unforgettable. The level of detail and emotion in that exhibit was amazing. The enormous hyper-realistic sculptures created with Wētā Workshop the studio known for The Lord of the Rings effects are 2.4 times life-size, with extraordinary detail — every hair, tear, and expression is carefully crafted.nnTe Papa is unlike a typical museum where you simply walk past display cases. So much of it is interactive and immersive, which made the whole visit feel engaging and enjoyable from start to finish. There was always something new around the corner, and it kept us interested the entire time.nnWe left feeling genuinely inspired and with a much deeper appreciation for New Zealand’s history, culture, and identity. It’s the kind of place that stays with you long after you leave. We would highly recommend visiting Te Papa to anyone spending time in Wellington — it’s an absolute must-see and a truly world-class museum experience.
Visiting Te Papa while in Wellington felt iconic & deserved! As tourists we learned so much about Aotearoa’s history & the Māori culture from a thoughtfully laid out museum.nnhonestly cannot recommend it enough! The museum was clean, quiet, peaceful & so much to learn. We spent a couple hours & felt like we didn’t see all of its offerings!nnBesides the history & culture, there also was a nice area of art that was beautiful to view. Also their gift shop is amazing!!! So many beautifully local made artisan goods that make the BEST take home gifts!
Absolutely loved my visit to Te Papa. Spent over 4 hours on day 1 and came back the next day to complete the visit. I highly recommend doing the 1 hrs introduction tour. Al our guide was just a delight and jad so many insights to share. Could have listened to him all day. Most people probably focus on Levels 1 -3 but I do strongly suggest to visit the art gallery on the top levels as well. So much fabulous art to look at. I would do it again in a heart beat. So much to learn and see.
This was a highlight of my trip to Aotearoa New Zealand. I learned so much about the country through my visit. There are all kinds of different exhibits, many of them interactive so they are engaging for kids as well. I recommend setting aside 2-3 hours so you can take it slow and see everything, there is so much to discover. Highly recommend visiting here if you’re in Wellington.
